very good piece of equipment for composting
I receive my food cycler it was relatively easy to put together putting the caps over the filters was a little difficult but with a small amount of oil they slid on very easily. Using the food cycler is easy. I wouldn't recommend any kind of newspaper clippings or anything that can get jammed up in that system. straw isn't good either unless you grind it up first gets caught up in the machine stops. I've had it a little over a month and have already filled 25 gallon buckets with finished compost. I haven't made any compost tea yet but will try that next I would totally recommend the system as far as up to know its work great and no bad smell whatsoever. I have ground up then dried coffee grounds eggshells and other food waste have not tried bones though I believe this would get jammed up but other than that it works well and it's quick and clean

Doesn't completely compost -- correction: Doesn't Do Anything
The Food Cycler is fast and efficient, rendering all manner of food scraps from banana peels to chicken bones, into a black mass resembling soil within about three hours. However, composting is not complete. I put a bucket containing about half a gallon of the treated scraps out on the porch, where it was promptly eaten by raccoons. I just ordered a barrel tumbler to complete the process. After about 4 months, the machine just stopped working, I am really getting tired of paying top dollar for gadgets that don't work.

Neat idea
This is a neat idea and unit. I am currently using this in my greenhouse. I keep my kitchen scraps and when I get enough I put them in the unit and let it run. Not all the scraps come out as small as shown in the picture. Beware: DO NOT PUT BANANA PEELS IN THE UNIT. They do not work well. So far all other foods do well. After the unit is finished, I then add the result to my compose bin and mix well. At first I added to my potting soil, mixing well, but then I noticed those pieces that would be on top of the soil would start to mold/mildew making the top of the soil look ugly. Now by adding to my compost bin, it gets mixed in with the compost and thoroughly mixed in with the other compost. This process helps the compost process time be much shorter. I gave it 4 stars for the price. I think $299 is a little pricey for what you get from this unit. Also, it is noisier than I expected it to be, thus why I put it in my greenhouse. It is easy to clean, pop in the dishwasher and let it do the work for you.

Love the way it works the first 6-7 loads were ...
Love the way it works the first 6-7 loads were perfect No smell what so ever the food came out dry and brown from bark like consistency to a dirt like consistency. My goal was to try to get through a 5 gallon bucket of food scraps saved from two months of saving vegetable food scraps. As I got to the bottom of the barrel the nasty part The food cycled started spewing Cider vinegar steam. Considering this is two months worth of food scraps Technically I suppose you could say that the filters lasted around a simulated month, but considering I ran the loads simotaniously it for 3-4 days it's Way too early to be buying a new set of filters for 25 bucks, ! Perhaps I'll just put the thing in the garage so I don't have to smell it! it still dries and dries the food scraps saving time inside my out door composter.

pricey for something that only worked for 6 months!
absolutely loved this thing.. Until it stopped working. should have lasted longer than 6 months in my opinion. I was not given a link to contact vendor about my problems - so I guess I am stuck with a hunk of junk. Too bad - I REALLY loved it when it was working!

So much nicer than the compost pile!
I love this composter so much! I was so tired of dumping our food waste in a stinky compost pile or worm bin. I run a load pretty much daily and its so nice to put dried, ground compost on our plants! I have noticed I occasionally have to run a load a second time, but only when I've put in stuff that is too wet like grapes, watermelon or citrusy things. We've done meat, veggies, avocado seeds, chicken bones and all sorts of leftovers. The only thing I think I've seen not ground up is cherry seeds.

This product is really just a grinder & dehydrator - but dehydrating & grinding your food is a really smart way to keep your kit
It's quite satisfying to have a third option in your kitchen for disposal - Trash, Recycling & now Composting without the stink & grossness of a typical countertop pail. This product is really just a grinder & dehydrator - but dehydrating & grinding your food is a really smart way to keep your kitchen trash can free and clear of rotten smelly foods while doing a service to the environment at the same time. It's pricey - but you'll feel great about using it every time & you'll take out the garbage far less often.

not what you think
I am very disappointed in the food cycler. It says it's a composter. To me the definition of compost is decayed material that looks like dirt. When I use the cycler the compost comes out crisp & stuck to the sides of the machine. I have to pry it off the sides. I have even had to soak the container to get it off. All is does is dry, cook and shred the food scraps. I used some of the "compost" when I repotted my tomato plant. It doesn't seem to like it very well. The leaves are all yellow. This would be good for anyone who is just looking to decrease the volume of food they throw out. I would not recommend this to anyone who is looking for real compost. This is a very costly mistake.
