Q: How far from the top hook is the first cross bar? My door has a coat hook that comes 5 inches down so wondering if it would fit without taking it off

Yes about 6 inches but the shelves are actually some sort of cloth being pulled by the bars and very wobbly. The hook would have to rip thru that cloth and whatever you hang will get in the way. The worst thing is that the top bar is too thick and the door of my closet would not close unless I was willing to sand down the top of the door frame, not a good idea. Whatever you do if you get it, put it together fast so you'll have time to return it.
