Good question! I'm sure that you can try to help them associate the smell, but I think it would be easier to use behavioral therapy to teach them. This could help, possibly, but they are not as picky as cats, so they can learn to"go" somewhere, even if it doesn't smell like something else. Also, What would Jalen if you ran out? Would you want them to associate the SMELL with a place to "go", or the pad? Just a suggestion!
