Superb whistle
Comfortable to and sounds really good throughout the rangeAs I have aged I have had to adjust to the piper's grip and find the tone just as readily there as with standard grip. A superb whistle at a reasonable price very highly recommended.

Good value.
Nice clear tone, although a little heavy compared with the Tony Dixon pvc lowD, which is easy to use. I do like practice on it, but still prefer the pvc for normal practice.

Tony Dixon Low D Whistle
I know it's a cliche but this whistle looks good, sounds good and feels good. The alloy used has a pleasant matt/satiny finish and is a different (softer ?) alloy from that on the other Dixon whistles I have. (an A and Low F.) This alloy and finish seems to me to be of higher quality - I suspect it was used because it is lighter in weight. The only reason for not giving it five stars is that it is a bit on the quiet side - although this is really only an issue on the lower register. The highest notes are easily obtained without any force of effort. This is not always the case with low whistles. The low notes, though quiet, are solid and don't seem to be affected by moisture build up - again, a common problem. To my mind, the ABS (tough quality plastic) mouthpiece makes for a more mellow and haunting sound than the more metallic sound made by an all alloy whistle.(The sound is not dissimilar to that of Davy Spillanes Low whistle playing on Savourna Stevenson's album - Calman the Dove. It's worth checking out the CD) So don't let the mouthpiece put you off. (NB Tony Dixon will sell you a flute head for this model so you can switch between whistle and flute !) The sound isn't too breathy either - a criticism made of some low whistles. I found the fingering stretch quite comfortable - and I've never had to learn the so-called "piper's grip" which is usually required for low whistle playing. (I do admiitedly have big hands and long fingers)This is a super whistle for a very reasonable price.
