A Great Read for Leaders Ready to Go Deeper
This book hooked me right from the title. Beyond the Hammer is more than a leadership book—it’s a real-world guide for any leader tired of surface-level fixes and ready to dig into what truly drives performance: belief, purpose, and accountability. The story of George and his mentor Marty felt authentic and familiar, especially for those of us in manufacturing who constantly wrestle with short staffing and culture issues. Gottlieb gets it—and breaks it down with five leadership pillars that you can apply right away.“The echo of your voice” is one of the stickiest takeaways I’ve come across in years. How you show up—and what you ignore—ripples through your entire team.I run a podcast focused on mindful manufacturing leadership, and this book lines up perfectly with the kind of deeper conversations our industry needs more of. Brian, if you’re reading this—I’d love to have you on the show. Let’s keep this conversation going.

Everyone needs a "Marty" in their corner. Now, we can share ours.
I met Brian once over 10 years ago at an event in Vegas - though he won't remember me. I was tagging along with the owner of a small patio cover/sunroom company I was working with at the time as his sole sales rep. Brian heard that this owner was struggling and spent a dinner with him (I was the quiet "Amelia" in the corner). The Pillars "of truth" he offered and the humble confidence with which he delivered it - inspired me. Had I not lived on the opposite side of the country, I would have jumped ship that night and worked for Brian in any capacity he would have had me. Knocking doors even... yuck.A couple years later, the owner of that small patio company failed as Brians advise sadly never got past the dinner table. But not with me. I found a new company to work with just a few weeks after that dinner who better aligned with Brians message and my vision for myself, and I excelled in sales to the point of becoming 100% self gen lead independent. I won countless awards, and a decade later, now run a large sales team of around 25 reps for a good company - along with a small coaching business on the side teaching home improvement sales people how to become fully self sufficient and take back control over their sales life. No more "please sir... may I have another crappy lead so I might eat??" nonsense. lol. When I heard Brian sold his companies, I was saddened as I always thought I might one day find myself in that corner of the country. But alas, the universe leads us where it needs us - and this was not my path. But when I saw on Linked-In that he was launching his book - I purchased without hesitation. I thought I was returning a small gesture of a favor - but again, I'm the one who benefits most... Imagine my delight when the book echoed content from our dinner discussion 10 years prior.Thank you Brian for your impact 10 years ago. Your voice of leadership still echo's 10 years later. My path is still being forged daily. But your pillars stand strong with me. Enjoy your retirement. You've earned it. 👍

Inspiring, actionable advice!
What I love about this book is not only the quality of the information that it gives, which is very high indeed, but the simplicity with which I can absorb the lessons and use them in both my personal and work life.I wanted to read this book because I am starting a new leadership position within my sales team. What Brian so poignantly teaches you here is not something that you have to mull over and over before you can apply it, but rather skills and beliefs that you can immediately put to very good use. The results of using these skills and thought process are equally quick to see.I knew Mr. Gottlieb’s book would help me in business, he has been a mentor to me in the past, and when it come to inspiring people to believe in themselves, there is no one I’d rather learn from. What I did not expect to get from this book was the immediate positive affect it had on relationships in my personal life. The lessons I took from the work not only make a lot of sense in a business setting, they make a lot of sense in my personal relationships, too. As a father, husband, and friend, there is so much to be gained from these lessons.Lastly, the format of the book is genius. The story in the first half is engaging and enjoyable to read. Rather then just giving the reader bullet points and then explaining them clinically, the storytelling aspect shows how the techniques and lessons work in a very believable way. In the second half of the book you get the more analytical nuts and bolts of the practices and beliefs. Put together into one cohesive book it makes for something that is both fun to read and easy to remember and apply. If you consider yourself a leader in any way; at work, at school, at home, on a sports team, or a foreman on a job site, do yourself a favor and read this book. It will change your life for the better, and it will make the people around you better for your presence.
