04-08 Ford F150 or Lincoln Mark LT Grinding Noise
My truck was making a terrible grinding noise at low speeds intermittently. Sound was terrible like metal to metal scraping. After hours of research I knew the IWE was partially allowing the hub to engage resulting in loud grinding only at low speeds. I thought it was a vacuum leak, the check valve, hub actuator (nightmare repair) or the IWE solenoid. Before buying vacuum lines etc I decided to just change the IWE solenoid.First off, all videos make it seem so much easier then it is for Ford 150’s 04-08. I was getting code C1979 btw. It’s a job for sure because you will need to remove battery and the tray that hold the battery 4 (1/2 bolts). Make sure you unhook the wires connected to battery holding tray and take out. Using an impact driver with 1/2 socket attached. Then use 10mm socket to take off 2 bolts holding IWE solenoid. Then unhook electrical connected which will probably break (used zip ties to hold new one in place) and carefully remove vacuum lines. Install new and reverse steps etc.It actually stopped the grinding sound and the code went away. Instead of paying mechanic hundreds in diagnosing issue you can do this for $20. Mine old IWE solenoid had the water shield but still failed. It’s gonna take roughly 1 hour or less if somewhat mechanically inclined. It’s definitely worth a try if you are getting a grinding noise from front wheels that happens at slow speed and then goes away. This fix is easier with 12th and 13th generation (remove from water shield) but that’s life. Your sound could be other things but I figured it was worth a try and so far no noises and it seems fixed. Good luck!!! Also wanted to mention my truck would go into 4wd h and 4L with old IWE which would stop the grinding noise so don’t let that make you think yours is still good. 👍

Worked great, got 4x4 back!
Took 5 min to install and 4wd worked after install. In my case, the hub actuators were also shot and I had very little vacuum to one of the wheels so I also replaced those items as well (actuators and vacuum lines). Amazon is by far the cheapest source for all 3 of these items.

2010 5.4
To start I have a 2010 f150 with a 5.4. I had a rattle type noise that sounded like it was coming from drivers side wheel well. After hours of research I concluded that it was the 4wd system trying to activate while accelerating. Also in my research I found it was most likely a check valve, solenoid, or vacuum leak. After finding a bad check valve in the vacuum like right by the solenoid I ordered that and this solenoid. I got the solenoid as well because my style did not have the rain cover and this was so cheap I figured why not. I installed the check valve and the problem was solved. I put the solenoid in the next day when it came. The solenoid was very easy to install and works just fine. I had to use zip ties to install it because there was no room in my 2010 to put it on the drivers side firewall. I believe the prior years were all on passengers side where there is plenty of space. The connection goes in just fine. This solenoid did say it did not fit the 2010 but I wanted to try it since it was cheap and had the rain cover. Worst comes to worst I would just return free of charge(thanks prime). So the conclusion there is that it will work just fine in a 2010 5.4, you just have to get a little crafty. I wouldn't use this method in a classic sports car but it will do just fine for a daily driver pickup.I installed the solenoid about a month ago and all is well just in time for winter. I have used the 4wd a few times now with the snow we have gotten and it has activated fine with no problems. I will update this review if that changes.

Fits my 2005 Ford F150!
This "easily" replaced my old uncovered solenoid on my 2005 Ford F150 XL 5.4. Easily is in quotation marks because where my solenoid is on the truck (behind the battery mounted to the firewall) it was tight. However not too tight where you have to pull off any components to get to. My 4x4 is now working properly!

4 wheel drive works again!
I just bought a 2005 f150 fx4 and the 4wd didn't work correctly. Sometimes it seemed to engage but the light would just flash momentarily. I received the car fax with the truck which showed that the hub engagement assemblies had been replaced 3 times but the hub locking solenoid had never been replaced. It had the original solenoid which was prone to take in water and ruin the hub locking units. This Dorman unit has the upgraded water shield and after installed, the 4wd system works perfectly. The system engages right away. And it's an easy install. It's on the firewall behind the battery and it's just 2, 10mm nuts, a vacuum plug and the electrical plug.
