Q: 1) is the cb1 a plugin replacement for the cm4? 2) can i use it on the raspberry pi cm4 io board?

1. No. It is not pin equivalent, CB1 doesn't support the CSI or DSI header and is closer to a PI3B in specs. 2. No, see above.

Q: do you folks provide any clues as to how this would be used with a 3d printer? I mean I provide tech support for the industry and can't see it.

This is /meant/ to be used in the place of a Raspberry Pi for 3d printers. Instead of having a separate raspberry pi from a 3d printer control board, a raspberry pi compute model (or in this case, the BTT CB1 alternative) sockets into the BTT Manta M4P or Manta M8P. However I don't see why it couldn't be used for any project calling for the use of a RPi Compute Module.

Q: Will the pi4b + cb1 run octoprint?

Yes, and it does require the pi4b adapter unless mounting it in the Manta boards, also suggest the heatsink, as it gets really hot unless you have a fan blowing on the chip. I have 3 CB1, 2 in the pi4b adapter, and another on a Manta. All running Klipper and Mainsail.
