So good.
obsessed. I've been a fan of hojicha since I was a kid, but when I was home in Indonesia and Singapore I had a Hojicha latte and I couldn't stop thinking about how good it was. This is fulfills my cravings and given that hojicha is low caffeine I can even drink it on a cold night in lieu of hot cocoa. This powder tastes great and I like the price point. I've reordered 3 times and the quality has been consistent.

Not my cup of tea
Update: bumping up to 4 stars. I don’t drink it, but it’s really good on sweets. I like to make myself cottage cheese with honey crisp apples diced on top, usually topped with maple syrup and cinnamon. I added a pinch of houjicha and just a small amount added so much depth to the flavor of this treat! Please try it. I’m going to experiment more on various snacks and try adding it to certain drinks. So, still a no for me on being a latte on its own, but so great to add to other things!Original review: I love matcha and import a variety straight from Japan. I have to wait for my next order to come in, so I thought I’d try something new in the meantime. I didn’t end up liking this houjicha that much. I think it’s ok for baking, but it’s not good enough to drink. I can’t say this with full confidence like I could for matcha since I have tried many matcha brands and types and only this one houjicha. I would need to try many more to create a better frame of reference. It doesn’t taste or feel high grade though. I am interested in trying more since it was pretty good, just not great. I had it plain, with maple syrup, and with milk and honey. I’ll experiment more. If you’re not a snob and just want to try something fun, get it I’m sure you’ll like it. Seems very versatile

Flavor is weak
Aroma and taste are lacking. It’s too grassy for lack of a better term. Color is also very pale. The trans world matcha organic hojicha is roasted better and tastes better. Might be better baked instead of in drinks

Update: made me sick
Edit: After drinking this I got a case of what felt like food poisoning. The next day I tried it again wondering if maybe something else made me sick and the smell in the bag had sort of mellowed out to a kind of fish food sort of smell. I'm not sure if I got a bad batch or what. Revisiting the idea that I got sold a bag of bull kelp. It was much more gross and I couldn't drink it. Feeling kind of repulsed to have tried it twice. Maybe I got a bad bag and usually this product tastes good and that's why I liked it initially (?) I don't know. Amazon made an exception since I'm quite sure it's bad and gave me a refund. This product isn't usually refundable so I would just pick a different product that is. Lost three stars for being nasty but Amazon customer service gets 5 out of 5 today.Original review: When I first opened the bag and got a good smell of it I was fully convinced this was going to be disgusting. It smells almost exactly like seaweed snacks. I thought this stuff was going to be terrible and not at all a suitable replacement for matcha. I mixed it per the package instructions but went with a scant tablespoon instead of two teaspoons (I know I like my drinks strong). It looked like dirty duck water that desperately needs changed. (We just got ducklings it's the best reference I have). By my third drink I knew there was a problem... I was still drinking it. By the halfway point I really knew there was a problem... I was liking it! I don't know about chocolate, or caramel, or toasty nutty notes or whatever the internet says. This stuff tastes like seaweed! I asked my husband if he'd like to try my drink and he says, "Your kelp latte?" And I hadn't said anything about this stuff tasting like kimbap. He takes a drink and says, "Ugh, seaweed!". Dead to rights he got it. I don't know man this stuff is delicious. My husband's pretty sure we got hussled and we have kelp power but kelp is good for low thyroid and it's yummy with milk and sweetener so I'll take it. Four stars because it's made in China and I'm an American so I don't trust Chinese manufacturing.

Great all-around hojicha at a great value
It can be hard to find hojicha specifically - it isn't as ubiquitous as Matcha is becoming to be. I love baking with ingredients like Hojicha, Matcha, and Black Sesame, and this is my go-to for hojicha powder specifically. It's done the job well for lattes, cookies, Hojicha Tiramisu, and other desserts and drinks.

Perfect for Hojicha Fans
Ever since visiting Japan I've been searching *for months* for a good quality, affordable hojicha. I made an iced latte with this right away and it did not disappoint! I think a lot of the negative reviews are from people who have never tried hojicha before this; it has a more earthy, toasted flavor than matcha that's not for everyone, but if you're a fan of it then this hits the spot. If you buy this and regret it, there's a lot of fun hojicha desserts you could make with this powder.
