Excellent Dock! More detail in review
This Review is for the DOCKCASE Visual Smart USB C Hub (9-in-1). I’ve now had it for a couple of months, and so feel more comfortable about sharing my experience with it.In summary, my opinion is that this is an excellent docking/hub solution, and so far my experience with it has been great.I especially like the small screen that provides information about what’s plugged in, etc.., and the high speed UHS-II SD card slot. The screen is great and very useful, and the UHS-II card slot is definitely much faster than most other card readers I have used. The USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports are also nice and fast. It also offers good specs and an excellent price/performance ratio, especially when compared to many of the other available dock/hub options. In addition, this hub/dock has a refined, elegant look and feel, and looks great on the desk (and for you Mac users out there, FYI, it’s actually an almost perfect match to the space gray color). The small screen on the dock also has an added benefit: If you are using it with a very quiet PC or a Mac, the screen shuts off as the device does, making it clear that you computer is actually off (this may seem like a minor issue, but for me it’s actually turned out to be an unanticipated but very helpful benefit). As some background, I was originally looking for a larger powered dock, but after seeing some of the prices I decided to examine some other options. In comparison, and to give you more perspective, I already had also used some other hub type products (specifically the QGeem 7 in 1 type C Hub to HDMI, the ATOLLA USB hub 3.0 Powered 4 port Super Speed, and the UGREEN SD Card Reader USB 3.0 Card Hub Adapter). While these were all good in their own ways, and for specific applications, I was still looking for a better single hub/dock solution with more/faster ports, that offered a faster USH-II SD card slot, and that could also could be used for pass through charging with a laptop. Oh, and didn’t cost more than a mini computer! (I actually thought it was a bit ironic that I could buy a nice minicomputer for less than a dock, and still kind shake my head over that.)So...after much looking, I finally decided to try this dockcase 9-in-1. It looked good, had most of the features I was looking for, and best of all was a fraction of the cost of the OWC products, etc. that I had been considering. At the time I made the purchase, I had considered the DOCKCASE to be a ‘compromise’ product, but I was instead very pleasantly surprised! From the moment I opened the box, I could see that this dock was a beautifully made product, and after I hooked it up and did a few SD card downloads, etc., I was impressed with the speed and smoothness of its operation. The small screen was really useful, too, and gave me a lot of additional information that I’d never even realized could be displayed by a dock, especially one as slim and elegant as this one. (Also good to know: you can rotate the display to face whatever direction is most convenient for you).I’d also like to note that so far this dock has remained relatively cool, which is a big positive as some docks can get quite hot. Even some really expensive ones ($400-500 plus) are known to get very hot.The negatives: to use the pass through charging, you need to supply your own own 100W PD Charger, as one is NOT included. Personally I would have rather had one included and paid a bit more for the product, but maybe the manufacturers just decided to keep the price point down by omitting this (and to be fair, not everyone would necessarily need one, depending on how you are intending to use this product). However, the dock does have a PD charging page which shows voltage, current, and (most importantly) Temperature, which is helpful, so if you do supply your own PD charger at least you’ll be able to monitor how that’s working.I also wish the 9-in-1 DOCKCASE had a DisplayPort, and perhaps another USB C one as well. On the other hand, for the price, this is definitely a nice dock, and one I’d still highly recommend. I’d also say that it should be more heavily promoted by DOCKCASE, as otherwise it’s easy to overlook this potential solution when you’re trying to find a good dock/hub that meets your needs (and that’s one of the reasons I decided to share my experience with it in this review). In closing, thanks for reading this, and please click “Helpful” if you liked this review and would like another update on this product after I’ve had it for a few more months!

Don't upgrade with the current firmware from their site!
Here is the result I got from applying the latest firmware upgrade. A mirror image both in terms of background and text! Just made the device useless. Even using the tool to reset to default did nothing. Very disappointed! It would also be helpful to have an actual support page with a downloadable manual in PDF format. The included manual is ridiculously rendered in a very small font. It would be extremely important to have this document detail all the options and choices in the configuration panel! Also, how does one personalize the welcome page? Not a word about this anywhere. Why not have an earlier firmware version to recover from the current disaster!Love the product concept but boy, the manual needs complete rework and the firmware upgrade seems to be a real problem.UPDATE: 2023-FEB-14I am pleased to report that Ms. Katy Ma from DockCase and I exchanged multiple emails. She provided the current firmware needed to restore my unit and it worked. She further advised me of the need for the host USB C port to support the DockCase. There are three factors that are needed: USB protocol, PD protocol and DP Alt Mode. The latter two were unknown to me and evidently the ASUS mother board that I have in one of my PCs does not support the latter two standards and that is why I was getting error messages. Fascinating! She also took care to listen to my critiques of the unit including the need for an updated instruction manual and replacing the USB 2.0 A ports with either USB 3.x A ports or better yet USB 3.x C ports. My warning to not do the firmware update from their website still applies! That firmware is for units sold before 2022. All units sold through Amazon have the latest firmware installed.Time will tell but at this point I will change my rating to 4 starts and express appreciation to Ms. Ma for her replies.
