Just as discribed
I have to wait about 18 months to see if any will take. Easy to put in logs.

Contaminated
My first order was contaminated & was instructed to return it but it was difficult to return this product so couldn't & was charged a bunch. Contaminated order was promptly replaced with another contaminated order. I gave up with a loss.

Already Colonized by Mycelium
I'd like to start growing my own mushrooms, so I was ecstatic when I came across these spawn plugs for Red Reishi mushrooms. This kit allows you to grow your own mushrooms in the comfort of your home. When the package arrived, I could see that the pack was already colonized by mycelium. I found a hardwood log in the mountains and figured it would be suitable to inoculate. Apparently it takes about 6 months to see any growth, so we'll see. It seems promising though!

not so sure on these
I'm a mushroom grower and have been for some time. I also usually make my own plug spawn for outdoor grows. I just opened and used about 60 of these in oak logs today an I'm not 100% sure on how they will do.Pro - super, duper colonized. Tons of mycellium.Cons - obviously very old - the plugs were all stuck together in a giant clump that I almost needed a knife to cut apart. Clearly they have been in the bag a very long time judging by the amount of brown metabolites in the bag. The myc is also yellowing, a sign of older material. Reishi is known for having tough myc but this stuff goes a step beyond that.- staining shows a fluid leak out of the air patch - not ideal packaging though air flow is required - no liquid should ever touch the filter patchIt will be months before I will be able to tell how well this grows so my fingers are crossed. I *think* the myc should still be viable but if I decide to order live plugs again it will be from another seller - this has been sitting in a warehouse for a LONG time.

Definitely alive
These Red Reishi Mushroom spawn plugs are tiny woodworking dowels that have been inoculated with mycelium. According to on the spot research I conducted, Reishi have certain preferences for growing, but they aren't horribly picky either, just pick a hardwood log (I have American sweetgum so I used that) drill some holes, and hammer them in. Picking fresh wood reduces the risk of contamination with other fungi before this specie can reign supreme over the log.The major metric to judge these dowels with, in my eyes, is are they alive? And the answer is yes, so alive, my hand was forced to install them quickly, because it had grown so much it was pushing the limits of the bag it shipped in. As long as you have freshly cut hardwood logs (no pines or other softwoods, or poisonous woods like black walnut) as the instructions tell you about, this is a great choice to make a new colony of edible, but mostly medicinal Red Reishi mushroom.

Would not recommend
I opened the package when it arrived. The packages of colonized plugs were super hot to the touch, full of that orange metabolite liquid, and pretty gnarly looking. Not sure if the spawn will be viable.

Dead or alive -- hard to tell
I bought these plugs as one of my first attempts at growing mushrooms, so it could be that my lack of experience is the problem, but I have had no growth of any kind from these plugs. I was concerned about the condition of the plugs when I received them, so I put a few into a grow bag with some wood chips to monitor their growth. I have successfully cultivated other types of mushrooms in this fashion, so I would have expected to see some growth, but it remains dormant after six weeks.

Colonized fast, small growth.
This is a set of 100 wooden plugs inoculated with spores to grow red reishi mushrooms. The plugs are meant to be drilled into the side of a tree or dead wood and placed inside to introduce the spores to the wood in order to grow mushrooms. When I opened the package I could see that the entire thing was already colonized with mycelium. This is a good sign for growth and probably a good sign for quality. I am currently waiting for growth after fitting some of the plugs into a log from the fireplace.I can see that mycelium covering the log quickly but I am not seeing any growth, even little hints of the actual mushrooms themselves.I have a lot of faith in this set. It might take a long time to show growth but I wanted to send the review to express that it is definitely the real thing and seems powerful.Conditions have to be perfect for it to grow but coming out of the bag it definitely looks very potent.
