Q: does this thermometer need a battery

No batteries needed Rose - It's basically just a thermometer - The red band indicates optimum temp. for frothing cappuccino milk.

Q: How fast is it? Does it read instantly or is there a ~2 seconds delay?

I haven't had need to use it. But 2 seconds is neither here nor there.

Q: is the clip removable?

Yes the clip slides up or down the stem and so could be removed

Q: I only need froth for one. My small jug may not be deep enough. Any ideas?

As long as the tip is in the milk the thermometer will still give a reading. Another way of getting around the problem is to purchase the larger jug as the amount of milk required for a single 'froth' will still froth up well.
