Every filter is on a MERV scale. The more “stuff” the filter will catch, the higher the MERV number. So, the filters for pollen, pet dander, and dust will have the highest MERV. The lowest MERV will catch the least amount, however, they also help your A/C unit run more efficiently and need to be changed every 3 months as opposed to every 6. The more layers to a filter, the harder the unit has to work to force air through it. What type of filter you choose will depend on your allergies (if you have them) and the amount of dirt and dust in the local environment. It’s very dusty and dry with frequent wind storms where I live, so I use a filter in the middle of the MERV scale. My parents use the lowest MERV filters (also the least expensive) and simply change them more frequently since they’re location isn’t quite so dusty and windy. Hope this helps!
