Good product!!
The product was very well packed when received. As for the product itself, it was not aesthetically pleasing. I can understand why some of the reviewers here were disappointed. Not the design per se, but the uneven cooking surface. It can put you off, especially if you were expecting the smooth finish of nonstick cookware or even preseasoned cast iron ware of internationally known brands.I wasn’t confident about using it as is (although the product is supposedly preseasoned) and I did think about returning it. Then I changed my mind and thought of giving it a try. And I am glad I did!!The photos that I have attached are of the rice pancakes (velayappams) that I made on my first attempt at cooking on this pan. They were perfect And the pan was as good as non-stick!! I didn’t have to use a truck load of oil (just smeared a little as I do, even on nonstick pans). But I PREPPED THE PAN BEFORE USE and this is how I did it:The first time I washed it slightly vigorously with mild detergent and sponge because of the black residue from the factory. (I didn’t try to get it all out on the first go). Then I wiped it down with cloth (didn’t let it air dry) and left it on the stove burner on low heat to let it dry completely. Next I smeared a fair bit of coconut oil on the pan, (including the non-cavity/cooking areas) and left it on the stove burner on medium heat for about 20 minutes. It will smoke quite a bit - so make sure you leave your gas hood on. :) Then turn off heat. Let it cool and use tissue/cloth to gently wipe down the residue, if any.I repeated this cycle for seven days. (Second day onwards I started using little to no soap to wash it).*I found the heat distribution to be even. No complaints on that front.*As for its durability, it’s too early for me to comment on that as I haven’t used it long enough.* It is pretty heavy (as cast iron is supposed to be).* The size of the cavity is adequate to make MINI uthappams, pancakes or vellayappams. And you get four perfectly-shaped ones!!In all a very good purchase. I suspect that the negative reviews posted here are by folks who don’t know how to use/care for cast iron products.
