Q: Can this handle a Walgreen-sized store with carpet floor full of hair/dirt/cardboard bits/pebbles/etc?

I am back to add that the model with a wider cleaning path is listed as the same model the 5713B.....there seems to be some confusion on the listings since the is another on listed as their last on e and it has a 13" cleaning path verse the one I purchased with a 10" cleaning path.....also the weight is about 2 lbs more on the wider version,,,hope this helps

Q: How does it do with pet hair?

I don't know about pet hair but I can tell you that this is a very excellent vacuum cleaner. We tried 8 different vacs that would work on our new carpet this works great. The only other one that worked was a canister that was over $1000.

Q: Does it do floors as well as carpets?

Yes, this unit is for all floor types.

Q: Does the sanitaire bagless 887 have a lower hook for cord control?

No, Due to the size of the dirt cup bracket, there is no lower cord hook. (I think they show it in the manual but it is wrong).
