I wouldn't call them self watering but I still love them!
I bought two sets of these. One in teal and one in gray. The first set I used one of the coir pucks in the bottom of each of the pots and topped with my own soil (which the seller recommends as the coir doesn't contain fertilizer). The other set I used just the coir, as I had run out of potting soil. Personally, I think I prefer the coir. It absorbs quickly but also dries a little quicker than the soil (Miracle Grow all purpose, if anyone's interested), which helps to keep the plants from sitting in soggy soil. Which is another thing that needs to be addressed. These are primarily pots with large reservoirs. They may help protect you from under watering, but they make it much easier to over water. This is why I'm not a fan of the term self watering. While I love the bottom watering feature, which can be highly beneficial when watering correctly, you need to remember it's mostly the substrate that's drawing the water up, not the plant's roots. Instead of automatically adding water when the indicator drops to the bottom, see it as a sign to start checking your "soil". If it's still moist an inch down and your plant looks fine you don't need to water just yet. Also, make sure your plant is in the correct substrate. Even though it's nice the coir comes with the pots, a succulent is probably not going to like sitting in it (I'm currently taking some Gardenix 5" pots out for a test spin with LECA for my aloe cuttings).Again, I love the bottom watering feature. It helps keep the substrate on top dryish, reducing the chance of mold and buggies. The outer pots are quite sturdy and the liners seem strong enough to do their jobs. I did have some issue putting together the indicators for one set of pots. I ended up having to sand the circumference of the top pieces a little, where they connect to the brown tubes, in order to get them to fit. The other set (along with the 5" pots) were easy peasy to put together, though.Would love to see larger pots in the future!!!!
