6 Shrimps very Happy
Ok, so I downgraded my small shrimp tank (40l) to this Fluval. You can expect a learning curve with this tank, for start access to the tank is via a small hole at the top. This small hole induced quite a few spills at first until I mastered the water change with a drinking cup. This is not a tank for fish really (maybe a fighter or some small cardinals would work) but is ideal if you are looking to create a shrimp paradise. I have 6 amando shrimp in the tank and they are very happy. The lighting is excellent for small plants and the all-around visibility is also a strong point. The filter is adequate with adjustable flow and yes, there is enough room for a small heater inside the tank. All wires go through the filter housing which does tidy things up a lot. I found the tank a little tricky to cycle and added some substrate and filter media from my bigger tank, once I had done this the cycle was quick. This is a small tank for a few small creatures and not anything that can be upgraded so if you are thinking bigger look elsewhere. As a tank however for a small tiny fish and a few plants it is ideal.

Smaller than advertised
Hi, I am very pleased with the look of my Fluval edge 23L tank, however, when it came I was very disappointed with the size of it as it is advertised with the dementions 54cmW,44cmH, and 40cmD, but the tank is actually 43cmW, 36cmH and 35cmD!!! So I am limited to what kind and how many fish I can have, I was thinking of sending it back, but now it's all set up it looks too good to dismantle. So Amazon you need to change the dimensions on your website or the trading standards might get involved.G Russell

Fiddly to maintain but well worth it once up and running.
TIPS:1. Be sure to buy a long pair of large tweezers with this as they are invaluable when to comes to access, given that you only have a small hole to work with and not an open topped tank. Also buy a magnetic cleaner, and familiarise yourself with how to move it carefully round the corners of the tank from one wall to another without separating the two halves. Takes a little practise but you'll master it.2. If the trickle from the water outlet annoys you then make sure the fill level is a cm or so above the base of the collar on the access hole which will silence it.3. The filter will rattle when you first fire it up but should phase out into a whisper quiet hum after a few minutes. Before set up I advise removing the impeller column (the fan piece on the bottom) from the pump, which is magnetic and should slide out easily, then using a q-tip carefully apply a small smear of vaseline to the thin metal rod inside the housing shaft of the pump itself, as well as the tiny hole on the bottom of the impeller unit that it slides into. This will ensure an even quieter pump.4. For best results use substrate sand rather than gravel, it fits the aesthetic of the tank way better and keeps any fish poop on the surface where it is easier for the filter to hoover up, leading to cleaner water.5. Having owned one of these for ten years I've found that the happiest inhabitants have been shrimp (Amano, Bamboo, Vampire) and Albino corydoras. Other corydoras find the small size too stressful and worry themselves to death, whereas albino corys are almost blind so don't really notice the confined space as much. 3 is an optimum number of them to have in a tank this size.6. Placing your heater vertically just to the left of the inflow pipe looks best in terms of organisation, while also ensuring the most even distribution of temperature throughout.7. Dwarf Anubias do well in this tank if you're looking to add live plants, and thrive with minimal maintenance.8. The lighting unit for the 12 gallon version of the same tank can be bought separately and fits this tank too, giving you a brighter look due to having more LEDs. Well worth the extra investment.9. ALWAYS remember to remove a pint or so of water before putting your hand or arm in to do deep maintenance. Britta filtered water is good for topping it up again afterwards, and in general for keeping on top of evaporation.10. When cleaning the filter sponge just squeeze repeatedly it under a running cold tap till muck stops coming out. I change my sponge for a new one every two years and have never had any issues.
