Challenge of Command: Reading for Military Excellence (West Point Military History Series) Paperback – October 1, 2001

The book helped me begin to develop my own education plan for OPD. It was interesting to see the summaries of others’ experiences and learn from them as well as look at the greater picture of my future.

This book is excellent for Leader Development and training. Especially US Army Leaders. Recommend reading if becoming a Commander or Officer within the Military.

Got this for my son after his flag transferring ceremony. It's not a new release book but the tidbit from well known commanders are timeless.

Good officers often ask the question - "What should I read?"Well this book gives a solid base for where to start. There's several years worth of reading suggestions (for the average reader that is).This will be the first book I give to every new LT under my command.

This well-written and short book was crafted to serve as a starting point for those military leaders who wish to further refine their leadership skills. The author introduces a number of leadership concepts and provides a lot of thought-provoking insight, based in his own experience and those of other military leaders he interviewed. I read some chapters, and went back and re-read them to make sure I had gleaned everything I could from his writing. Throughout the text and at the end of each chapter, he lists several books that you may want to check out for further study.

By all means this text is essential to your quest to become a leader. Although slotted for an outlook more akin to officers; I would highly recommend this book to enlisted members as well. As an NCO myself this book was incredibly insightful and has definitely furthered my career as a member of the military. If only more officers would read this book the Arms would be a much better, and effective, entity.

My Colonel suggested this book to be and it is absolutely excellent and will allow you to learn beyond the book with other works of litiriture as well!!
