Learning through Story
I guess this is what you would call a living book?It teaches you so much about many different birds without feeling like it's doing anything more than telling a story. My 6 year old loves for me to read this, but she is a book lover already.I have paired it with out Zoology Flying Creatures of the 5th Day cirriculum and the National Geographic Backyard Bird Guide. Reading this made me want to learn more.I borrowed it from the library for many weeks before buying so I was aware there weren't beautiful color pictures. That is why I often pair it with the field guide so we can see colored pictures also.

Fabulous old fashioned oral reading with great educational value
Fabulous old fashioned oral reading with great educational value! Great for homeschoolers and parents who want to really educate their children on birds in a delightful way. The knowledge of birds are woven so much into the story line that it is caught without much effort. The technical readers read well without distracting from the story. We use it for our multi-handicapped blind daughter that functions at about 7-8 year old. She is captivated by the story. We follow up the stories with a CD of bird songs. Highly recommend it.

Full of good information, but a bit dated
I bought this book as a gift for a neighbor child who enjoys watching birds at the feeder between our houses. When it arrived from Amazon, I skimmed through it, and had mixed feelings. The stories are wonderful to read as an adult but seem a bit dated, and, while still an enjoyable read, may be less than engaging for many children. The illustrations are fairly interpretive and rendered in black and white, so the book doesn't function as any kind of quick reference. But as a learning tool for increasing a child's acquaintance with familiar backyard birds, it's very good. Paired with a good quick-reference field guide or chart, this could make for many happy hours of satisfied bird-watching.

Kids love
A classic. My kids love sassy little Jenny Wren. Be aware that she does call others "stupid" a few times in this book and "Old Mother Nature" replaces God as the creator. We talked about it.

Excellent read for 4-10yr olds to know about common birds
Excellent book. Happy to find the one that i was looking for. By creating a narrative storyline for each of the birds, the author has made the learning so much easier for the kids. The language is simple and very humorous for the little ones to remember for long time. I would recommend for any parent who is willing to read this to their 4-10yr old kids.

This has to be the best way to introduce birds to children
This has to be the best way to introduce birds to children! I read the stories to my 7 and 5 year olds and they love it! However I wish I would have coloring pages to go with the bird stories to keep kids occupied as they listen, because they are a bit lengthy stories sometimes. But we love it when we see in real life the birds we read about. And wrens will always be Jenny wrens to my kids now 😉

not a children's book
THIS BOOK IS NOT DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN. It has no pictures and the print is too small for children.
