Jean Grey is the Marvel alpha now
So if Jean Grey now channels the force that created the entire universe that should make her the alpha of the Marvel Universe as well. Now all the other Marvel characters seem like her underachieving foot soldiers by comparison. Seriously, to me this is a Top 3 Marvel Movie because of the stellar acting of Sophie Turner and Jessica Chastain. One of the few I've watched more than twice. The effects also look great on DVD upscaled on a 4K TV. Highly Recommend. Enjoy!!

PERFECTLY FINE FILM -- DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS
I seriously do not understand whence comes all this negativity. This film is perfectly fine; well made, VERY well acted, well written. I cannot for the life of me see what all the hate is about. It really makes no sense. To begin, the Jean character in the previous film was truly awful. I'm not certain if that was due to the writing, the directing, the editing or the acting. But whatever the reason, the Jean character was utterly flat, uninspired, a real train wreck. But now, in Dark Phoenix, somehow, "magically", Jean has come alive. She is fleshed out, dynamic, convincing and -- I must add -- masterfully portrayed. Good grief, I was chewing my nails for half the film and most of those nail-chewing moments were Jean's.I know that there are several contributing factors that can realize either a brilliant or a failed character portrayal. I've no idea what changed from one film to the next, but I suspect the script and the direction might have played a significant part. Whatever the reason, in this film, I really believed Jean was a real person, being "torn apart" mentally and emotionally. She is really run through the grinder in this film -- and you believe every second. Because the portrayal of this character is so spot on, so convincing, that you never doubt what she's enduring. It is all credible. And,, more importantly, it is all understandable. You always know where you are in the progression of the story, with the locations, and with the emotional development or deterioration of each character.I cannot delve more into detail without giving away the surprises and shocks, so I'll just say that this film is more than worth seeing. Do NOT pay any attention to the negative press this film is getting. I gladly gave it 4 stars (my maximum number for most films; 5 stars being reserved exclusively for the flawless, perfect, classic films with which we're all familiar). I am mystified as to why so many reviews are bad. It makes no sense at all. I mean, I'm assuming that these people actually WATCHED the film, that they actually PAID ATTENTION to the story, the characters, etc. Because the only way someone could have given this film a bad review is if they'd never bothered to see it, or never bothered to pay attention to the details, thus not having given it an honest viewing. The only other reason I can think of is that these people are somehow receiving under-the-table payments or favours for their negative reviews. I don't know.. I suppose anything's possible these days. Although I wouldn't like to think that matters have sunk so low. There's just one small, nit-picky complaint I have about the film; and I had to really look carefully to find this tiny flaw, believe me. That's how well-crafted this film is. My one complaint is the depiction of the fire Phoenix. It was just too literal; too exact. It should not have been portrayed this precisely. It should have been far more subtle. By making it so damnably literal, the filmmakers (or probably the producers) are showing what contempt they have for the audience; that they consider the audience at about the level of an ignorant 5-year-old. That's genuinely insulting, in my opinion. Granted, I understand that much of the audience for these films is indeed this ignorant; but there's no need to rub everybody's nose in it.

Dark Phoenix - Dark Times for the X-Men
I think it's fair to say that everyone was pretty excited for this movie. After the well-chronicled failures of X-Men 3, this is one of those stories that felt tarnished and perhaps misused previously by Fox in the X-Men saga. It finally came time for them to address the character of Jean Gray again, and give her a solo movie this time. Unfortunately for all of us, it's probably the most forgettable movie in the X-Men franchise to date. This movie is incredibly dull for the weight of the story being told, and it's really a shame to see all of this talent go to waste (for presumably the last time at Fox).Sophie Turner is great as Jean Grey, but I want to say that most likely the writing is to blame here in this movie. She demonstrates her struggle, repeatedly, by telling other characters "I feel great!" when she feels great, and "I can't control it" when she feels overwhelmed. Her acting alone carries these hollow words to their highest heights, and there's not much else she can do. This can be said about many of the characters throughout the film, who are given terrible lines and make the best of it with their acting ability. Having people like McAvoy, Fassbender, Chastain, Lawrence, Hoult, Sheridan, on and on... they all carry this pretty hollow movie to some sort of end.Watching Special Features, Simon Kinberg (writer & director) explains a lot of his reasoning behind decisions made for the film. It seems to me that he was almost egged into the director role (by Lawrence) and had doubts until he wrote this story, which means he's very attached to the character of Jean Grey (and the talent). I don't know what it was that drove him to remove some of his great ideas, but a lot of what he talks about that was cut from the movie would have added some variation and color to an otherwise bland film. Throughout the commentary and hour plus long "making of" feature, they explain scenes that were cut, and some that were even filmed but later removed. I'd think those were great ideas, then they'd say they were removed to "keep the focus on Jean and her struggle". We didn't need reminded for 2 hours that she can't control a fiery, cosmic power. We want to see everyone develop, but they just remain stagnant while Jean struggles with the same flux of vulnerable to invincible for the entirety of the film. This was a disappointing movie, and the bad reviews were well-deserved. I skipped it in theaters and now I don't feel as bad about it. I'm a little upset that I bought this on 4K even, because I don't feel that I'll really ever want to watch this again. Being that it's likely the last film in this new set of X-Men movies, I can just pretend it ended with Apocalypse (which wasn't great either) and leave this one alone. I waited and waited for it to be $15 and still I wish I maybe would have bought the Blu-ray for a little cheaper or waited a little longer for an inevitable price drop/bundle deal on 4K. If you're a completionist like me, wait for a sale or the end of your X-Men binge to pick this up. Ultimately, if you're new to the franchise or characters, it's best to pick another movie in the saga. This one just has very little to offer, other than VERY strong performances from a lot of A-list talent. So of course for fans of those involved, it might be worth a rental to see just how talented some of them can be with so little.
