This book was a fantastic find!
Wow! There are 45 horses who are personal friends of mine, and after reading this book, I feel that I know them so much better now! I had already figured out many of their quirks and cute personality traits, and now I have a whole new insight. For example, now I understand that the reason Image is "attitudinal" is because his mama was lead mare when he was born, and he's not about to let anyone forget it. And Casanova is the "class clown" who, if he likes you, will entertain you for hours with his (sometimes annoying) antics like knocking the hat off my head, over and over again -- and if he doesn't like you, don't turn your back on him, or he'll nip you in the butt (but never hard), and by the time you turn around, he's looking the other way, as if to say, "Who did that? Not me!" There are stories in the book to match and top any I have to tell, including a senior horse who liked to play jokes on cows. It's a terrific read and very educational as well. If you are looking to buy a horse, there are tips for selecting one. And for those who enjoy horse racing, there are tips for betting on horses, based on observing their behavior before the race. There's something for everyone in this book.

A MUST READ for anyone wanting some insight on how a horse thinks & how his rider should be thinking...
This a great book! That said, it's not what I expected at all, I thought it was going to have a lot of pictures but there isn't even one. The descriptions and great horsemanship throughout this book are what makes it great. If you have the patience to read it through, you will not be disappointed, the authors really cover the way horse think and communicate between one another.(And between a horse & human/predator) There is a bit of speculating but since the book was written by people & not by a horse, there would HAVE to be some speculation. In all honesty I was surprised at how easily & quickly I read through this book (I really was expecting pictures or photos) it was like sitting down with some good friends and just having a really good conversation about a subject that is so often misunderstood, misconstrued, misconceived, the horse. If the authors decide to make a second addition, I would recommend they add some picture so the not so 'instant fix' horse enthusiast will get be teased in and get the information they really need.

And The Language of True Horse Lovers
I'm a sixty year old male who's never had a child, yet almost every child I see seems a beautiful, wonderous miracle. But I never had to raise one. I'm also a horseplayer. And almost every horse I see seems a beautiful, wonderous miracle. But I never had to own one. This very warm and enjoyable book satisfied everything I ever wanted to know, biologically, socially, and occupationally, about horses and the people who own, handle, and love them. It sometimes confirmed, sometimes corrected, and often offered new and insightful observations that now enable me to more accurately assess the current condition of a horse on the racetrack. It has also helped to increase my understanding and enjoyment of the literature on horses and horseracing. In my opinion, I won a first edition of a classic work, in good condition, at a bargain price. It was a winning value overlay.

Very interesting read. As a horseplayer and handicapper, this is really out of the box thinking in an era of Ragozin Sheets, Timeform, and many other speed figures sold in the market. There is little in the way of a betting edge when many of the "professional" handicappers have access to these speed figures and are well versed in using them. The ability to spot a healthy, race day ready thoroughbred in the paddock or for that matter being able to downgrade a horse using same methods can be a big advantage. I have incorporated the lessons in my analysis when going to the track. Doesn't work 100% of the time of course - but most days you only need to be right once to make it payoff.

Best book for understanding horse behavior
This is not a book about history or breeds or how to ride. This is a book about why horses do what they do (by explaining their senses, their place in nature, etc,).

THIS BOOK NEEDS TO BE REPRINTED
When you can understand a horses body language, you begin to understand much more. It shows the way people act thinking they are so very intelligent when they are not. If you can understand body language of an animal TI TEACHES you about your own actions not just with animals, but how out of touch we are with each other.
