This is a chapter of American History I never learned ...
This is a chapter of American History I never learned in school. Hicks tells it with suspense and riveting detail that kept my attention through every minute of his presentation of Chief John Ross's extraordinary life. Ross may be as important to American History as any American president... not because of the external monuments he built, but because of his challenges, on behalf of the Cherokee Nation, seeking the upholding of the US Constitution, over four decades, while negotiating directly with 7 US Presidents, speaking before Congress, and winning a case before the Supreme Court.I don't think we can have a clear and fair understanding of the American historical record without considering the implications this story.

Looking for Family Background Information
This book provides the basic information I seek in regard to researching a part of my family background. Good documentation of the reasons behind the "Trail of Tears" and the resulting shame of a Nation misdirected. The major routes identified for the relocation of the Cherokee Nation are well documented and has prompted me to visit the various sites in the near future.

Cherokee Trials
I read this book some time past but it is a history that one remembers. If you are interested in Cherokee or Native American history, you should definitely read this book. Even though I have some knowledge of reservations and native american culture, I had never heard of John Ross before but he played a large role in the attempting to settle the Cherokee nation. The book describes the usual devastating results of the white mans movement into the west and how it affected native american. Its a true story that describes John Ross as an intelligent and caring man who tried to help the Cherokee. Read it, you'll like it and it may inspire you to read more regarding all Native Americans.

If you are not furious you are not paying attention
Informative tale of abuse of trust and out and out lying and terrorism by the US government. The writing is frequently B-grade detective novel level, but the history is interesting and infuriating.

Great book on Trail of tears history
Although this is not a novel, it reads like one. Very interesting and informative and a sad time in history. The author does not cover up the corrupt U.S. government at that time, especially Andrew Jackson. Very well worth reading.
