Rise of Skywalker before Rise of Skywalker
Only for people who interested in the Expanded Universe in the nineties. You get some interesting plot points like: Boba Fett returning Palpatine being revived via essence transfer to spare clone bodies. Also, Luke "playing" with the dark side. If you read the book you'll know what I am talking about. Now, honestly the story is really fast-paced with great action. However, if your looking for those deep character moments you're not going to get it in this story. And that's the bummer about this book. Your introduced to new characters that play very minor roles in the actual story. That's a shame; because those are missed opportunities. Additionally, the artwork took some getting used to when reading it. On the other hand, I did like seeing Boba Fett return and chase after and Han and Leia. Now about Emperor Palpatine, I honestly was mixed about his return. At least his resurrection was explained better here than in the movie that came out in December. But, I will say that it does diminish what, Vader did in Return of The Jedi. One thing that did bother me throughout the entire book: SUPERWEAPONS! Jesus Christ... come on now World Destroyers and then a Galaxy Gun! As an author don't be afraid to take a risk and be innovative. Just felt like he played it safe here. Well, you do see Luke rise up to the challenge and really take a stand against, Palpatine (Leia too). This is why I titled it The Rise of Skywalker; read the book yourself if you think I'm lying. Definitely buy the kindle version though, I wouldn't waste no more than twenty dollars for an actual hardcopy. I would only recommend for hardcore Star Wars fans like myself.

Terrible art, 4th grade dialogue
I can see why Disney stole pieces of this and forgot all the rest. The story is redundant and unfamiliar, the dialogue was written by a child with simple ideas poorly expressed, and the stories focus on simple characters to the neglect of Han, Leia, and especially Luke. Just bad, bad, bad. What a waste of the property. Worst of all, the art is cringeworthy. Just awful. Lando was a red man and we never saw below his shoulders because he never left whatever foxhole of a command room he was in. Luke was wide-eyed and green, then purple, then yellow. Was the entire team behind this on drugs? Determined to prove a point that ugly was the future of sci-if? Legitimately disappointed. Concept was great, but the execution was awful. Ugh. How was this allowed to go to print?

Incredible artwork and presenation
Are you even a Star Wars fan without knowing about this incredible storyline for the original characters? I would've been very pleased to have see this made in to a trilogy of its own in the late 80's/early 90's with the original characters but alas all we have are these comics, but that's enough. The artwork is incredible and the storyline matches. Highly recommend if you can find in physical copy.

I've read Dark Empire several times now and I've got to say it's fantastic. It's more of a gothic telling in the Star Wars universe. From the planetscapes, to how the stormtroopers look, this story line is truly a "dark" version. A civil war between the Imperials, new Imperial war machines, the Rebels on the run, just an all around good story. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is the artwork for Empire End, the final book. It's rather...basic, and does not match the style of the first two books, which are great in terms of the artwork. I would highly recommend this series.

Horrendous illustrations
This was disappointing. Beautiful covers but the interior illos were colored in basic monotones and no attempt was made to resemble the characters. Storyline was promising but ultimately unfulfilling. I read this years ago and don’t remember it being this bad, but it must have been.

The Unofficial Sequel Trilogy
I haven't actually read the comics themselves, but, I have listened to the audio-drama that was made based off of this and read almost everything the Star Wars wiki has on this series. First off, I loved the ideas that are prevalent in this series. Second, it took the Star Wars saga into a new age, and helped give the rising generation the added boost to help keep the series alive until the Prequels could be made. Third, George Lucas was involved in the process. And last but not least, Lucas himself said that if he ever decided to make the Sequel Trilogy, this was the closest thing to his vision of it. This alone should make it a worthwhile venture.Updated 12/20/2013: I have since actually read the comic books. I absolutely LOVE this book. And while it does seem to dismiss the whole Chosen One, this was released before Episode 1, so it can be forgiven. I was annoyed however that the Wookipedia article for this adds how Luke crashed the Star Destroyer they stole ROTS style onto Coruscant before being captured by a vortex. This never happens in the comicbook. At least the crash landing of a Star Destroyer.

A great story to continue the Adventures of Luke Skywalker...
One of the best Expanded Universe (now Legends) stories out there. It put Dark Horse on the map with Star Wars fans and broadened the scope of that storyline. Also, one of the first (if not the first) in the modern graphic novel series. It holds up very well.

Eh?
The art is not so great, nothing is colored to look real. It's like this art was done in black and white and then water colored afterwards. It looks weird.I haven't read the books so maybe the story didn't translate so well into graphic novel, but it's hard to follow and overly simplistic at times, no nuance.

Proper star wars! Thoroughly enjoyable. Recommend.
I was feeling a bit disappointed with the latest trilogy, telling myself that have to wait till it's over before canjudge it and that meant for a younger audience like I was when star wars first came out? Then I came across reference to this on youtube and I was hooked. This sounded like star wars. This wasmore what I was looking for!Now I am nearly finished and can see similarities with the way the movies are going and so have paused, since I want to watch the movie first instead of going in to it and complaining about how much betterthis was than they are. No, watch the movies so that don't have spoilers. Then can finish off and enjoythe proper star wars story...

Great start and middle, poor end
This is perhaps the first graphic novel I've really enjoyed. Parts I and II were fantastic. The art was wonderful and the narrative, for the most part, compelling. The shorter part III, however, lacked all of these qualities. Gone was the minimalist and stylised art, as was the subtle writing. It's still a good trilogy overall but what a shame it ended how it did.

A must have
This is suggested reading for any star wars. One of the interesting parts is seeing the star wars universe expanded before the prequels or new sequel trilogy. Boba Fett being a storm trooper who killed his commanding officer, a new take on the Jedi Knights (very different from the prequel order). Great read.

It's ok
I've never read a graphic novel before and this is a let down after the amazing writing that is the Thrawn Trilogy. That said, I suppose the authors of this medium are always hindered by the available space. The reason I picked this up is that I didn't want to miss anything important before I read The Jedi Academy Trilogy and it is probably worth that piece of mind for any other star wars fan who plans on reading those books.
