Overall a good read.
I bought the book after watching the anime. While the story is overall the same. The anime made certain additions that made the story way more interesting. This doesn't take any merit from the book, which is actually a pretty good story with quite a few surprises for those who haven't watched the animation, but it might be one of those rare occurrences in which the adaptation turns out to be better than the source material, at least for me.Going back to the book. The dark atmosphere is properly developed and the story is intriguing. I would think of it more along the lines of a dark mystery novel with some supernatural elements and not of a horror story per se. Koichi, the protagonist, provides a good insight of how the entire situation unfolds through the course of the book, but with the exception of a few scenes here and there, he seems to be a little too detached from the situation. The character development in the book is not particularly the best either, I would say that with the exception of Koichi, and perhaps Mei, it is lacking for the rest of the cast, yet it still makes sense given that everything is seen through Koichi's eyes, and Mei is the person that interacts the most with him.

Couldn't stop reading
When I started reading this book I couldn't stop. I bought the Vol. 2 on the spot, because I just wanted to read them both as if it was just one long book.As a person who has read the manga and seen the anime (I've never got to see the live action movie) I can point out several things. This first volumen mostly introduce the characters, which are less than in the other two, you don't need that many main character to write a book, but to illustrate the story and keep it interesting you need more people, more drama, more characters to love and hate, and so on. In a book you can express much more with much less. The pace is good and, although is a mystery-horror novel, it's a pretty light Reading, meaning you won't have to take a break from all the tension it creates or anything. It's also well narrated. The only thing I have to say about it, that it's not enough to give this book 4 stars for me, is that it makes reference to events that happened in Japan, such as Sakakibara last name being the same name used by a killer in Japan who was active in 1997, a year before this story takes place. As it is a famous case in there, they do not explain this because the audience probably rembers the incident, as it is a japanese novel.I recommend this book if you like this kind of story, even if you read the manga and/or saw the anime, it's worth it.

Japanese suspense you should read
For those not coming into Another with prior knowledge of the story, I highly recommend you do not look up any more information. This is a mystery suspense with a lot of clues that can help you figure out what is going on while also having a very enteresting on-going story. The book has been adapted to an animation which follows the same basic story, having a few differences. I was made aware of the animation before reading the book, something I can honestly say is a bit of a pity, because the book is better. If you enjoy psychological horror and a good mystery I would read this. It is a very easy read and quick. The only downside is you may need to look up some references to Japanese culture which are not explained in the book. This is at best a minor inconvenience and I do not feel detracts at all from the story.

Immensely Satisfying Horror Mystery
I had heard of the anime and tried to watch it, but the something about the style, voices, etc just really put me off. I was intrigued by the story though and found that this book is what actually inspired the novel. For me, the book was 1000xs time better than the anime. What seemed too unrealistic to be entertaining in the anime was downplayed in the book and written to seem like such a thing could happen in any small town Japanese high school, or a high school of any country, really.I did not find translation errors to bother me at all. Once the story got going, I literally could not put it down. I had to buy Part 2 in a heartbeat (really don't understand why they sell them in 1 and 2). For me the whole dolls thing with the main female character was boring and odd, but I enjoyed the novel just fine by skipping those parts. The main storyline is unique and I sincerely hope there will be more, though the author has mentioned he does not see it happening in the near future (boo!).I love stories that affect a finite group of people and force those people to deal with the conflict and each other. You really got to see how human nature might handle a situation and it's entertaining to put yourself in the situation and compare your ideas of what you might do to how the characters actually handled it.Overall, a great translation of an excellent novel, and one of my new personal favorites.

Excellent Start
Another novel is an excellent start to a rather thought provoking, intriguing, and sometimes hilarious story. The horror or mystery elements in play fit well into balancing those elements and making this story quite the page turner. The class 3 curse, countermeasures behind how to deal with it, as well as internal dialogue of the main character, middle schooler Sakakibara were th most interesting portions of this story. The writing and translation is clear, keeping things explained or detail in a way with smooth flowing and at times modern dialogue.Definitely is worth checking out for anime fans and even new comers, there are differences.

A ghost story, inside a ghost story
Most schools in Japan have a scary story or two. 'Another' is what happens when those stories become real. It's taken the general formula of, here's the curse, what are the main characters going to do, and flipped it. It's a mystery genre of it a own. Instead of a whodoneit, we have a whatsdoneit (so too speak). The book is written like a timeline and the words flow smoothly from sentence to sentence, and leaves nothing to the imagination. It's truly gruesome when it needs to be and has that air of mystery which so few writers can hold onto for a whole book.A thrilling horror mystery from start to finish. And while there is still another book (forgive the pun) it leaves the end at a satisfying conclusion

Horrifying
Though the translation may not be the best, the story more than makes up for it. It a gripping thrill-ride of horror that left me turning the pages until the very last word. On a side note, I have also seem the anime adaptation of this book, and I must admit I think it is superior.
