The Little Guide to Butterflies Hardcover – April 17, 2018

I started homeschooling my kids (8 and 5) this year and we've been studying butterflies this past week, so I was searching books on Amazon for a good book of different butterfly varieties and came across this one. For each variety there's a beautiful full-color illustration of the butterfly on one page and on the page opposite it includes the butterfly's common name, scientific name, wingspan, habitat, distribution (where it's found around the world), lifespan, and what the males and females of that variety look like. It also includes a short paragraph about that variety which includes information like how rare or common it may be, what it eats, when it can be seen, and even notes folklore about that kind of butterfly. It's a small book (about a 5-6" square), but it's packed with great information. I like that it has a combination of easy-to-scan facts as well as the paragraphs you can really dive into. I think it'll be a great source of information and inspiration without being overwhelming to the kids. Even I got sucked in right away and read about several of the varieties. I can't say I've ever been wildly into butterflies, but reading about them has been fascinating! This is a great book visually and educationally. The back also has a checklist "spotters guide" with the names and smaller pictures of each butterfly so you could scan them easily if you were trying to identify one you'd spotted. Great book!

We love this book and am so happy to have made the purchase. Initially I was looking for an age appropriate butterfly book for my toddler son (2.5 yo) and didn't quite find anything I liked. I wanted him to see a variety of butterflies as he loves them. My son loves this book and to our surprise has slowly memorized the name of every butterfly in this book. The pictures and descriptions of the butterflies are great and the book is sturdy enough for abuse from a toddler. Highly recommended!

Beautifully illustrated, this easy to read little book made me marvel at the natural beauty represented by the butterfly. I also enjoyed learning more about the symbolism of this genre. This book made me feel happy and I will give it as a gift to friends.

My son likes me to read all the butterflies- the illustrations are nice. My only complaint is that it would have been nice if it had actual pictures instead of drawings. Still a great book for a child that is a butterfly lover. Small enough for their hands. Right now my 5 year old just likes me to read the name of each one but he has started to ask me to read where they come from and stuff (each picture comes with a paragraph or so about it). Fun book.

Love this colorful sweet little manual. Fits easily in the glovebox or backpack for outings. Our grandchildren love looking at the butterfly photos.

Wonderful prints, but unfortunately they were all enlarged to be roughly the same size for each individual butterfly page. I thought this was a very poor choice by the publishers. It's great getting to see the details of the prints, but I'd much rather have a sense of the actual scale of each butterfly (when applicable--many are far too large to be shown in actual scale when considering the size of the book).

I purchased to take apart and use in junk journals but having a hard time doing that b/c it's such a cute little book.

Loves the layouts, the illustrations are beautiful and the stories are interesting too. The only down side is that it only had two European butterflies. But I suppose if you’re hoping to learn about American, Brazilian and Mexican butterflies then it’s great!

Great size book for small Grandson, but yes I see what a previous comment about the quality of the pictures is like. Not photo's but hand painted pictures? Ok for a 15 month old, but older kids/adults may be disappointed.

I thought this was a lovely book. A really nice size with absolutely lovely illustrations, a joy to flick through and very informative but without being too heavy going and I loved how there is a spotters guide in the back to tick off the ones you've seen.
