Excellent for home studio.
This is a perfect size for the Home artist studio. The heat control is very sensitive, so be sure to get a thermometer to go with it.

I wish I had spent more money and bought the 16 x 16 Palette

Fancy Hot Plate
The large metal plate on this is amazing. It is very easy to clear off and keep a clean surface. However, I was not aware that it was simply a hot plate for the heating element so there are some issues with it. First, there are major hot spots, even with as small a surface as it is, there are major hot spots, sometimes registering a 20 degree difference in areas. Second, because the turn dial for the hot plate rests so far in the middle, under the already hot metal plate, it is easy to burn oneself if you are not slow about changing the temp dial. Lastly, there are NO MARKERS FOR TEMPERATURE on the dial or anywhere else on the device. It would be nice if there were at least a clicker, or numbers, or something that can give you any sense of returning to the same dial placement.

I like it the palette
Perfect size for a "wanna-be" encaustic artist. It doesn't take up much space ... heats well ... and allows me to play with wax! Fun!

Encaustic Brush Holder is Required, Note to R&F!!
I am just beginning encaustic work and bought this as part of a kit. I am struggling with how small the surface is and there is Nowhere to lay your working brushes!! (You can lay brushes on the surface, but the brush bristles stay above the heated surface which makes painting difficult and laborious. I should have gotten either the R&F 16"x16" kit that comes with the brush holder or an $30 electric griddle with a ledge around the sides. Trying to navigate brushes that need to stay warm but with nothing to prop them up a bit (if you think you'll want to use more of a color, just keep the brush warm) on such a small surface is frustrating. Remember to keep in mind you will need to have metal containers of slick and medium (plus white, black, XL medium, etc.) on your heated pallet the whole time.Hard to use, expensive, and frustrating. WHY R&F doesn't include a brush holder (or even Sell one for the 12"x12") is lost on me. Do yourselves a favor and skip this $175 item.
