one word - FANTASTIC!
There are a few single words in the English language you could use to describe this book, the stories of heroism, and insights into the murky world of special operations...I'll just choose one:FANTASTIC!Just like his other open source "guides" to DEVGRU and Delta Force, Martin's Modern American Snipers delivers the goods...continually.This book paints a little more graphic picture of Delta's recce squads of Advanced Assaulters and DEVGRU's black team snipers...not to mention the Ranger Regiment's incredible contributions to GWOT (even snippets regarding the Ranger Reconnaissance Regiment), MARSOC, and the ODA's among a HOST of others. Not to be overlooked, Webb, Murphy, Davis, Irving and the others at SOFREP should be commended as well for their matter-of-fact candor regarding the units, the missions and the men.As far as recommendations, saying "read this" is simply not enough. If there is only one fact based wartime novel you read this year - or in your lifetime - MAKE IT THIS ONE!

A Dry Book
If you're looking for exciting tales of snipers in action this is not the book you're looking for. It's a bureaucratic description of how U.S. special forces are organized, from SOCOM to Devgru, including how each group began and how it relates to the others, with an emphasis on internal politics. The book makes a point of calling out the important players by name, and you'll come away having heard of everyone from Marcinko to McRaven, but there are few detailed stories of their exploits. The stories that are included are usually brief summaries of the more detailed accounts already published in other books.

I really liked this book
I really liked this book, but, to me, the title is a little misleading. Expecting in-depth sniper experience, instead, I was presented with a fascinating history of Special Forces which is well written and researched. If you are looking for a blow by blow account of US snipers, it isn't here, rather a few paragraphs, lacking in specific details of various actions. Having said all this, I did enjoy the book and that's why I gave it 4 stars. I am sure that the title was the publisher's idea and not the authors. If you are looking for a detailed account, then I can strongly recommend "The Reaper: Autobiography of One of the Deadliest Special Ops Snipers" by Nicholas Irving with Gary Brozek

Modern American Snipers is worth the read, this book covers all the well know snipers plus some not to well know snipers, just because they have not written a book on themselves. Over all good that covers the different types of training that each services goes through for their own sniper courses and the actual deployments is also covered in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many operations are covered from the different services and very detailed training course and unit organization is covered as well. Great book on this subject

You really should read this book!
With the recent bright-light media attention on the personalities and exploits of snipers and sniping in general, there has been confusion and disagreement about the ethics and value of this instrument in our militaries bag of tools. The author gives the reader a unique and valuable "behind the scope" perspective into the lives of those men who repeatedly go into harms way to protect their brothers and sisters in arms. You will read riveting accounts of battles won and lost, and more importantly lives saved because of the skill and dedication of having the right man in the right place at the right time.

Sniper books based on real life persons.
I've read and re-read Chris's book. I've read Nick's book, as well. Both have a recognizable style. Chris's book introduced a unique idea with the inclusion of Taya's thoughts and feelings from her perspecitve as a SEAL girlfriend, then wife and mother of his children. Nick's book reads as though Nick himself were writing and organizing thoughts. . .He didn't try to impress the reader at all with a sometimes overly-used format so common when other writers co-author a book. Both were wonderfully individually written, each with an openess and honesty the reader will appreciate.. I have not had an opportunity to complete Modern American Snipers, but scanned enough to know it includes other snipers besides Nick and Chris with whom the public may not be as familiar. I'm anxious to complete it..

Action and History
This book has a great mix of on the scene action and unit histories, The author goes into detail about which units got which training and why. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in modern day snipers and the things that go on not only on the battle fields but behind the scenes as well. I have read a lot of "sniper" books as the subject has been an interest of mine for years and I can honestly say that I enjoyed this book more than most.
