Nothing but heartache!
I really hate writing this review because the machine is awesome. It’s small, fits nicely on the counter, quiet, and makes perfect ice. Until it doesn’t. After only six weeks of use, it stopped making ice. We contacted Opal customer service via email and waited a week for a reply. After several emails back and forth to diagnose the problem, we were told the machine needed to be defrosted and given steps to follow. We ran through the defrost and cleaning cycle 8-10 times. No luck, so we contacted customer service again and were told to run a vinegar wash through the machine. Vinegar wash three times, still nothing. Back to customer service via email (the only way to contact the company) to be instructed to clean the sensors. Sensors cleaned, still no ice. At this point it’s been two weeks since we first contacted customer service and we’re a bit frustrated but we reach out again. “You’ll need to purchase the Opal Cleaning Kit, sold on our website.” NO! Replace the darn thing! At nearly $500 it should work longer than 6 weeks and we shouldn’t have to jump through hoops when it breaks. Don’t buy it! You will be held hostage by your love of nugget ice!

I am in the process of having my second replacement ice machine sent in for repairs. The support team at Opal is a leaky bag of dog squeeze. If you don’t mind wasting a lot of money on a substandard product with design flaws and “Nigerian Tech Support” that only communicates through email, then this ice machine is for you. My first ice machine had to be replaced within three months because the pump failed. My second machine within the second week of use is now in for repairs because auger lets out noises like “nails on a chalkboard” and Jacqui from Opal Support won’t respond to my emails. Looks like I will be without ice this summer. Having Sonic ice would be awesome if I had a working machine instead of a water lined silhouette of where my $500 machine used to be. If Opal would give me my money back then I would by a different brand ice machine, but all I can really do is marinate in my frustration and warn others.

so sad to review this ice maker with only one star
So, so, so sad to review this ice maker with only one star. Don’t get me wrong... in the beginning this little machine made all my dreams come true. Perfect pebble ice by the cupful. But after two weeks it crushed my dreams. The light kept doing that little blue thing which means it needs more water. But it was full of water. No matter what we did it wouldn’t go away, or register that it was full, or make any more of my beloved ice. We did all the trouble shooting tips including the vinegar and the bleach washes. Left it unplugged. Tried again. Nothing. And after reading other reviews siting this exact problem, as well as the reviews saying that customer service is so hard to deal with from this company, we decided to find the silver lining and at least be glad our 30 Day return window had not yet passed. For $500 I’d expect more than a couple days of a functioning machine. So disappointed

don't think Id buy again
We got ours In November and it has already stopped working. I have contacted extended warrenty folks and it's still under original manf. warrerity, so they won't do anything. Sent messages to the manufacturer and no answer, none. I chatted with amazon and they say it's too long for a return, however the girl said they'd make a exception and let me return it, but she sent me a return for the filter I bought with it!!! Crazy people, I will never buy a big ticket priced thing like this again !!

worth the hassle!
Delivered on Saturday.....died the next Saturday. I use RO water that is reminerized with Aptera filter(also sold on Amazon).I drained and refilled every day. This morning, the button wouldn't start the machine...although I could toggle the clean/ice switch to make thefront button turn solid blue color. Then it would shift the color to some multi-color then to solid green. None of these colors correspond to info for the consumer. It was working flawlessly until this morning. It even linked up to bluetooth showing the machine was at 'idle'. Attempts to 'Make Ice' were unsuccessful. I'm sad bc the ice is excellent.I requested a return and was honored a return label immediately from Amazon. The automated response asked if I wanted a new machine, an Amazon refund or money back to the credit card. I have opted to have the new machine sent with the hope it will last. I wonder if I will get an First-Build-company intervention concerning the new machine being swapped. Amazon gives 30 days to return the broken/defective machine(in which I would use the packaging from the new unit), but I expect there will be an email explaining ‘1B is trying to fix it before shipping the new machine’. More on the process at it unfolds.....Update:Amazon sent another and it arrived on Tuesday. The shipping box looks good, the the machine has a big dent. The inside also shows signs of use, which suggests this isn’t a new machine but a refurbished. I have requested a return, which is a hassle bc I recycled my first box.I guess there is a reason the Scotsman nugget ice maker is $5k.Update Aug 5th....after almost two months, the bent-beast is working like a charm. To be honest, it is impossible to see the dent. The unit is definitely loud, but worth the hassle as the ice is excellent. We take our ice to get togethers at other houses and dole out the ice rations like we are on a desert island!
