How to Find Fulfilling Work (The School of Life)

Defines "Fulfilling Work" & Provides Good Tips for Finding It
This book is a real standout in the "career guidance" genre for two reasons. First, it offers a clear definition of fulfilling work. According to the author, the three elements of fulfilling work are meaning, flow and freedom. The book provides detailed descriptions of each of these elements in concrete and pragmatic terms. There is a logic and rigor to the presentation that is refreshing for this type of read.Second, the book offers straightforward and novel techniques for helping the reader find fulfilling work. The techniques are based on the idea of "act first, think later". That is, you are really not going to know what fits you best until you try it on for size. Although we might find the idea of taking a personality test to tell us what we should do appealing, the author cogently argues that sort of approach is not apt to work and that these techniques provide better alternatives. The book is a quick read but contains plenty of footnotes and references to other useful material. The Kindle edition at $2.99 is a real bargain!

Worth a read. No revelations or prescriptions, but a good set of questions to think on...
It's a lot of "obvious" advice, sure. But much like proverbs, quotations and other types of positive reaffirmation, one can never get enough of them. I think it gets the job done for its target audience. If you're looking for a push or a nudge into the wilderness that is "following your dream, not just your career goal", this book is a worthy addition to your psychological launchpad. The examples and stories are only mildly motivating but true value of the book lies in the set of questions the author asks you answer for yourself. If you take them seriously, they may go a long way toward identifying exactly what fulfilling work would look like to you. It worked for me, somewhat. It motivated me set aside time everyday to think hard about what I would call fulfilling work. The questions provide a decent framework. The process is meditative and introspective and requires a lot of emotional stamina. It may take a while. I don't expect overnight epiphanies and, I suspect, neither should most people.I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because I don't think the book will resonate with everyone. For example, if you're married with kids and a mortgage and other responsibilities, some of the advice will seem impractical.

Some people may be disappointed that this isn't so much about "action" and "doing"
Some people may be disappointed that this isn't so much about "action" and "doing", because it is more about going really deep with your values and motivations to create a livelihood that is fulfilling versus the traditional definitions of "success" like money, status, and power. It's really an exploration of meaning, purpose, and contribution, and if that's what you're looking for, I'd recommend this book. It's a quick and easy ready, though the exercises in it will take time, consideration, and may feel difficult, because we're not used to thinking this way. If you want fulfilling work, though, this book is a helpful starter for that exploration.

Why so many job seekers get it wrong
I found this book at the college bookstore that my wife attended because the title intrigued me both looking back at my career and having kids starting their careers. I wondered if there would be any information that was "new and improved" to use the old cliche. I started reading it and, quite frankly, could not put it down until I finished it. Easy read. Great insights. Well researched. And reiterating the concept that it is more about creating yourself, rather than discovering yourself, is probably the biggest concept that many people get so wrong but the author got so very right. A must read for everyone, regardless of what stage of the career journey you are in now.

Concise, real
I liked the fact that it was concise, didn't rely on fantasy success stories. It is an attempt to understand why we act like we do and the reasoning behind our actions. Also I liked that it doesn't promise you magic tricks to find your dream job (and also specifying that there is no such thing as a dream job and everything will have at some point or another thinks that we are not so keen of doing), but through some simple questions it encourages you to do a bit of introspection and know yourself better.

Great Guidance
I am taking a "radical sabbatical". I just didn't know it until I read this book. If you are looking to make a career change, but are unsure what you want to do this book is perfect. It doesn't provide lists of careers based on personality types or tests, it provides guidance on how to do the job research based on your interests. It helps you come to terms with possible salary changes and education requirements. I'm thoroughly enjoying the process and wish I'd found the books years ago or at the very least 4 months ago when I first lost my job.

Expected more
There's a lot of (free) content in the internet that explains same things in a more concise, clear way. I didn't find it much useful

5 Stars for the content.
5 Stars for the content not the condition of the book I reviewed. I buy a lot of books from Amazon but sometimes the books are not in the best condition. Unfortunately I did not take pictures when ( in 2015) I bought this book to provide as proof but might do in the future. Anyway below is my review for the book which I loved a lot.Phew Finally! I have finished reading the book. I thought I would read this 150 pages book in one sitting, however, I was about to find out that it would be not so easy because each paragraph had so much wisdom for me that I had to take a break and reflect on what I just read. This is not a book but a manual for finding fulfilling work.I have never made notes in my books because I love to keep my books in very good conditions and do not want to damage them while making notes, but this book has so much good stuff which I want to go back to again and again that I have decided to sit with a highlighter and start making as many notes as I can. This is the second book that I have read in the series the first being " How to change the world " which I enjoyed very much too, however finding fulfilling work has been a subject which is very close to my heart and this book simply blew my mind. The Author has done a great job of sharing all the different information and concluding how a person can find fulfilling work and live a fulfilling life. This book especially has motivated me to read all the books in the series now.Highly recommended and should be read by everyone.

Very good for 'beginners'
This book is very good for people starting the search for a change in their careers. It offers great tips and ways of thinking questions like:- what is a fulfilling work?- do you have to change jobs or can we make our current job be fulfilling?- how can I find what I want to do?This book takes lots of information from other books, so if you have some experience in the topic you will find some things repetitive, otherwise it is a must buy.
