From Branly to SDR
I got my first short wave receiver in 1964 and soon fell in love with radio, making a career out of it. Peter Jensen takes us through the history of radio, primarily HF and VHF as seen through the prism of various conflicts such as the Boer War, WWI, WWII, The Malaysian Emergency, Vietnam and so on to the present day. The viewpoint is from Australia, so as a Canadian I found it very close to home. Each conflict caused various changes and technical improvements to radio and Peter documents these very carefully. We follow the full gamut of spark gap transmission, Branly coherers to the famous PRC-77 and on to the latest SDR or Software Defined Radio. Also included are a set of full schematics for a subset of the equipment described, plus various projects where you actually build your own gear such as the "Paraset" and the solid state QRP transceiver. Along with the technical descriptions, we also have a comprehensive historical background with all sorts of interesting information such as tug of war between the allies use of "Ultra" and the axis use of "Cicero"!! For radio amateurs and enthusiasts this is a must read.

Not what I had hoped for, seriously. Being ...
Not what I had hoped for, seriously. Being a nerd i had hoped for more of a work concerning doctrine & equipment & technical specification. If, that's what you are looking for, don't purchase this.

A must for green radio enthusiasts
Other than the strangness of building a WW1 trench radio, not a bad radio book. Mostly covers AWA and Australian gear, but nice insights into some of the British politics and decisions that lead to some poor communication fiascos. As always, generals and governments prepare for the LAST war, not a future one. A good read, good technical info on some rare green radios.

Wow, Marconi's first wireless set was broadcasting an open spark.

Australian point of view
As a radio amateur, and a radio professional, I found it very, very interesting. It was very much worth the time.

An interesting account of military radio
Anyone with an interest in radio will enjoy this book, I believe. However, I'm not convinced the construction articles improve it. If they had to be included they would much better have been set in an appendix rather that in the main text. The author writes well but I feel rambles and gets side-tracked occasionally. It is crying out for the services of a good editor to turn a story telling into crisp narrative and make a good book into a very good book.

An oppertunity wasted.
I had high expectations for this book however I was badly disappointed! It is rambling and badly written to the point of it made me wonder if the Author was drunk at the time of writing. Many sections are repeated and bearing in mind it is a historical book about Military Radio has 3 constructional articles, one of which is a modern Ham Radio D.S.B. transistor transceiver. About as relevant to the book as a cake recipe! This could have been a great opportunity by the Author (I am not sure if it is even accurate to call him this) to write fascinating History of Military Wireless that has been sadly missed.

Commento su Wireless at war
Ottimo libro per la raccolta di informazioni in esso contenute e non facilmente rintracciabili. Buona la stampa anche se il carattere tipografico utlizzato risulta eccessivamente grande
