An impressive debut novel
4.5★sThe Sunday Girl is the first novel by Australian/African raised writer, actor and musician, Pip Drysdale. Taylor Bishop is in a relationship with a psychopath. She hasn't fully realised it yet, despite warnings from her mother and her best friend Charlotte, but Angus Hollingsworth, for all his good looks, wealth and charm, is not good for her.But they have an acrimonious split and he does something unforgivable: the sex video she never wanted to make has appeared online. And then takes his previous ex on the ski holiday he and Taylor had planned together. It's when Taylor is meting out some carefully planned revenge that she discovers some disturbing facts about Angus. Yet when he returns begging forgiveness, she eventually capitulates. Soon enough, though, she understands what this man is really like, and realises the danger that staying with Angus presents. Dare she leave? And how will she do this without reprisals? While Drysdale’s plot (woman in toxic relationship) has been used many times, her execution of it is excellent, making sure the reader is kept guessing until the jaw-dropping final turn. Taylor may come across as rather naive but her situation doesn't require a great deal of suspension of disbelief, and the technology involved is all too believable. A thrilling page-turner of love gone wrong
To the external viewer, Taylor has the perfect life. Pretty, smart, with a good job in real estate research, she even has the perfect boyfriend, investment banker Angus.Except, Taylor just found out Angus is cheating on her. On the eve of their ski holiday. And when she dumped him, the last thing she expected was for him to go on the holiday with the Other Woman… right after uploading a sex tape he convinced her to make, to the internet.I have to say, I’d have started thinking about revenge as well. In fact, Taylor’s a great deal sweeter than I would have been. It’s not until she comes to a sudden realisation that Angus is in fact way, way worse than she originally thought, that she starts to get serious. And by then, she’s in way over her head.I originally thought, with the comparisons to The Girl On The Train, that Taylor would turn out to be an unreliable narrator. But it’s quite the opposite, Taylor is scrupulously honest, even when her actions paint her in a less than flattering light. For any woman who’s found her prince turning into a toad, this book is so, so relatable. You’ll find yourself understanding every step Taylor takes, find yourself rooting for her and desperately hoping she manages to outwit Angus and find some sort of resolution for herself. This is Pip Drysdale’s first novel, and I devoured it in a couple of hours. It’s a fantastic, page-turning read with lots of intriguing twists and turns, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what this author comes up with next. Five stars.Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book for review through NetGalley.
