The book describes a lot of different designs for picture frames with photos of different concepts.
The book had very little details about construction details. Discussions of different wood types and attributes were absent. No instructions on tools required and methods. Most of the pictures of frames were for photo frames and nothing for paintings. The description of the book prior to purchase did not point this out.

A great reference book
I started making picture frames for people, so I bought this book. Perfect. It has a vast variety of frames and great information on how to build them. Love this book. It's a great reference book.

Lots of creative ideas but little on the practical skills
With a title promising to give the practical aspects of picture framing and very positive reviews, I bought this book hoping it would give me a good understanding of picture frame making. However, the detail is lacking. There are 256 pages but precious few are given to making a basic picture frame. Instructions on creating a good mitre joint for mouldings are poor as any inaccuracy in cutting or clamping will lead to a poor result. The advice in the book is to use wood filler to fill in the gaps of the joint rather than to get the joint right in the first place. There is little information on frame clamps and the one shown seems very basic (some string and some plastic corners). There is hardly any advice on selecting (size and type) and inserting v-nails into the frame and no mention of using splines for corner joints. In addition I would have liked more information on the variety of tools and jigs available and how to use them such as cutting mounts precisely, using a burnishing bone, inserting framer’s points and brads. Also I would have liked more detail on backing board choices. Strangely there is no mention of cutting mats. The section on framing a canvas left me baffled until I realised that the canvas must be already mounted on a wooden frame. The back cover promises to teach you how to make a tenon and mortise joint, but this joint is never mentioned within the text. Most of the book is given to ideas for picture frames where the frame is a piece of art in itself. If you are looking for a book of creative framing ideas then this book is ideal. However, if you are looking for a comprehensive book on practical fundamentals on making good picture frames this book is sadly lacking.
