Rolicking adventure balanced with surprising emotion
I actually prefer this series to Redwall.I also think this is the best Flying Dutchman book so far; while the prior two books did indeed contain marvelous swashbuckling adventures, this one had an emotional impact I did not expect. It's as if the situation of Ben and Ned and their imortality suddenly becomes something truly tragic and terrible and I appreciate Mr. Jacques for making that so clear. However, this is not to say that this book does not also have a great adventure. The aforementioned emotional impact also includes an intriguing and horrible slave trade operation that brings out some of Jacques' most villianous of villains. Always good for a juicy read.As always, the plot flows quick and thrilling, with Jacques' precise descriptions that do not detract from the story's pace. This is another example of Jacques' marvelous ability to tell adventures

An amazing addition to a great story
Although Brian Jacques is best known for Redwall, Voyage of slaves is one of the best books I have read. All three books in the series are excellent, with a depth of feeling and writing style that draws one in and makes us care for those we are following in the story. Poignant, beautifully written, Voyage is Slaves is best read after the previous two, and those who have read them will not be disappointed. Those who have not read the others can read, enjoy, and understand the plot easily enough to be enriched by the experience. The story is not so tied into the mythology of the series that one cannot follow it without having read the others.

Not as strong but worthwile for fans of the series
I quite enjoyed this book, having read the previous two in the series. The pleasure of reading Jacques lies not so much in the excitement of the plot but the communication of the different settings, characters, and interactions that colour his work in this series, as well as Redwall and others. In this way, this particular novel, although undoubtedly as his other works childish to say the least, holds the same natural appeal to all ages that make all of his works charming to read and light our hearts a bit.
