Lacking in substance.
This is a lot less interesting than I hoped it would be. It relies on pictures of old brains in murky jars, with very little history of the people they once were nor detailed explanation of the effects of the conditions exhibited in some of the specimens. The emphasis seems to be more on photography.

Abbie Normal, Yeah That Was The Name...
This is one of the coolest books I have ever seen. So many extraordinary photographs. Gives one a lot to think about. Extremely well done and highly recommended! And it always makes me think of the classic black comedy "Young Frankenstein" and that always cracks me up. Brains are fascinating.

The pictures are disturbing but beautiful in their own way
The pictures are disturbing but beautiful in their own way. However, there is not much in way of history besides the basics about the Austin State Hospital in this book. It is mostly pictures.

BRAINS! This book is fascinating, and the photography is just breathtaking. For the inner-brain loving/eating zombie in all of us.

Excellent
This is an excellent gift for psychologists and neuroscientists, or anyone else interested in neuroanatomy. Perhaps not such a good gift for the squeamish.
