Breaking the HEC-RAS Code: A User's Guide to Automating HEC-RAS

Some variables have changed since hec ras 5.0, and some of the VBA code is also outdated. For Ex. The list box .add item method. I can’t get dss output to work anymore. Some of the variables are now doubles instead of single and I feel more examples would have been nice, especially for that price.

I highly recommend this text to VBA beginners especially those who use HEC-RAS. This book provides a good way of learning a new language-VBA with good descriptions of the VBA basics and practicing with automating HEC-RAS.Bernard Bahaya, Civil Engineering doctoral candidate at the University of Toledo.

This book is a valuable tool for HEC-RAS users in order to automate procedures by controlling the program externally. The book is suitable for programming beginners considering that describes stepwise routines for controlling HEC-RAS from Microsoft Excel using VBA; however it also provides the necessary information for experienced programmers who want to do their own developments.The included examples are really useful for practical purposes. I strongly recommend this book specially if you need to perform computationally demanding tasks as Monte Carlo simulations.

Awesome Book! If you work with HEC-RAS get this book, I can 't say it any plainer than that. Even if you do not know much about VBA code the explainations by the author are clear and complete. I am using it to write some custom forms for model reviews and not once did I have that "ok, but how do you do the middle step?" problem, nothing is left out. There are many examples that you can take from the book verbatum and just modify a couple of lines to get the input or output variable you want for a form. The HEC-RAS wisdom in this book is worth a lot more than the price, costs less than one hour of an engineer's billable time, but will save many hours with automated procedures. I have only a little vba programming experience and did not have any issues with learning and using the examples and modifying them. The explanation of how HEC-Ras handles data was great! If you use HEC-RAS and don't get the book at the very least be sure to check out The RAS Solution Blog, I have found a lot of tips and tricks and just plain wisdom there.

This book is a fantastic resource that has already proved invaluable to me in the several weeks I have been using it. It is accessible for those with no programming experience to speak of, going through the basics needed to understand the very well commented example code. For those with more extensive programming experience looking to exploit the ability to automate the parameters and execution of multiple HEC-RAS runs, every possible internal API function is rigorously documented and the syntax needed to specify every detail of a model via its associated text files is provided.Depending on what you want to do, it might have even provided the code for you in the many example applications. If the potential to automate control of HEC-RAS might at any point be useful to you, buy this book.

This is an excellent resource for hydraulic engineers. The book is very well written and presented. The strategies presented in this text truly unleash the vast potential the HEC-RAS has, in its use from small scale hydraulic design to large scale dam breach analysis and everything in between. The text is complete with respect to relevant examples with explanation. Application of techniques presented herein will certainly make life easier for hydraulic engineers.

I have started to flip through the book and wanted to give you some initial feedback. The book looks to be everything I need to get started on some of my HEC-RAS automation projects! I have gone through the first few examples and am very excited to dig further into it. I believe this is the reference available that gives information on the HEC-RAS controller and syntax needed to program with it.

I liked the book and it was new, only small inconvenience was that it arrived around 3 days later than the expected date.

The book is very helpful and provides the list of the functionality available. Even if some minor questions arise, the author answers them at his HEC-RAS blog/forum promptly.
