VHT SP404 Engine Metallic High Heat Spray Paint – Gold Flake – 11 oz. Aerosol Can

Love the color and the way it looks on my calipers. Put it on one night that I was bored. Had it on for roughly 6 months and still hasn't faded one bit. Just sprayed the calipers with some brake cleaner then hit them with the paint. I didnt even use primer even though they reccomend it. I scrub them with a bottle brush every time I wash the car once a week and still going strong. I highly reccomend this paint!

Pros: - Near perfect match for Subaru Wilderness trim. (VHT SP404 - Engine Metallic Gold Flake) - Easy application. - Plenty of paint in one can. Applied 7 coats on each caliper and still had a good amount of product left over. - Even after seven coats, caliper casting details still show through which gives it the appearance that the calipers were made out of “gold.” Cons: - Very thin. Not like G2 caliper paint which is much more thick (like the coating on a candy apple). Not sure how this will hold up over time despite using VHT’s clear coat spray to finish and protect the paint. - Very toxic. Even in a very well ventilated area, I developed respiratory problems that lasted weeks. Review: I bought this paint as it is the only one on the market that very closely matches the Subaru Wilderness trim color. In the past, I’ve used G2 caliper paint, so this was my first time using VHT’s product. For prep, I cleaned off the calipers with alcohol (70-90%) and not brake cleaner. Brake cleaner and VHT sprays do NOT work well together. I masked off all rubber components, brake lines, plates, discs, and every nut and bolt. I then used VHT’s Flameproof/Very High Temperature primer - VHT ESP100000 (2 light coats + 1 light/medium). I gave a full 20 minutes between each application. I then used 4 light coats of VHT’s Engine Metallic gold flake paint (VHT SP404) with 15 minutes in between each application. I followed up with 3 medium coats with 20 minutes in between each one. Outdoor temps were in the low to mid 70s. Afterwards, I used 4 coats (2 light, 2 medium) of VHT’s High Temperature Gloss Clear Caliper Paint (clear coat - VHT SP730). The end results turned out fantastic - so much so that people have mistaken my work as special OEM/Factory parts. The dealership we purchased our Wilderness from was also very impressed. My only concern going forward is the durability during extreme weather and temperature changes, as well as coming in contact with road debris. At this time though, I am very pleased and would recommend. One caveat: be sure to wear a respirator even if you think you have enough air flow in your garage or whatever. I ended up with respiratory difficulties using this paint which is not something I’ve experienced with other not too dissimilar projects in the past.

Great color presentation, works well and paint lays smooth

Worked great for my cobra calipers. Applied the heat primer along with heat clear coat and they look great. Have held up good so far. They have a nice bright gold color which is what I wanted. Some of the gold paints are very dull, but this has almost a copper shine to it. Looks like a factory brembo color. Big fan.

I have some pots from Ikea that I like a lot but the paint loosened up over time and they got ratty looking. I also have a 10 year old $4 walmart tea kettle that also had cheap paint on it (imagine that) which was flaking off. I sanded them both down to bare metal with like 150 grit sandpaper, wiped them with Iso alcohol, and sprayed them with 3-4 coats of this paint. The pot I laid down bottom side up with the handle removed and sprayed everything including the bottom. That is holding up very well. The tea kettle I masked the lid and handle and sprayed it sitting upright. It too looks like I just painted it. It’s only been a month maybe so we’ll see if it lasts but it’s a huge improvement and I didn’t have to toss them in a landfill. The instructions say hold the can 18” away and they mean it - if you do this you will get perfect coverage, if you don’t, if you get too close then it’ll sag. I used about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of one can to paint one 1qt saucepan and one standard sized tea kettle.
