My husband and I love playing board games for date night after the kids go to sleep. We own and play a few regularly.WBefore purchasing we’d never played this game. We’d heard about it and had it on our wishlist. We’re used to playing games that range anywhere from 20-120 minutes. We watched a YouTube tutorial we’d found and read the ridiculously long instructions booklets. After 2 hours my husband gave up. I read up some more on the game, watched another video and convinced him to try 2 more times. It was confusing and the booklet really did have great “how to play” rules. It’s mostly just saying what can happen without saying how it happens.This game probably needs to be learned with people who already know how. For the most part I think we have it down but then we get a card or something and a wrench is thrown in and we have to pull the booklet out scratching our heads wondering what we missed.

I really like this game. Family oriented and decently challenging for everyone. I think it’s a step up from Catan. I love that you pretty much play your little game and no one can really interfere. Pretty cool you can play just one player too. Definitely gets harder to get what you need when more players are in the game. I love farm life so this is right up my alley.

My favorite variation is to draw 3 Occupations and 3 Improvement cards instead of 7 each, with the option of exchanging one card during every harvest. This allows you to establish a targeted goal while avoiding the downtime of fumbling through a big hand of cards.The rules are a bit hard to understand, which is why I recommend watching YouTube Playthroughs before playing the game.The Revised Edition is said to fix the game and balance the cards to improve Agricola's gameplay.I purchased all the expansions and upgraded game tokens, which improves the game and thematic feel.Agricola is a fun, family-oriented game with enough depth for strategy lovers yet light enough for casual gamers. I highly recommend it.
