Carpentry referance
I purchased Carpentry from Residential Construction Academy for a reference book. A year earlier I purchased House Wiring to aid me in wiring a workshop I had built. It did a great job taking a neophyte through the various steps needed to completely wire a house. When the electrical inspector checked my work, he commended me on a "fantastic job. I designed and drew my building right down to the last two by four. During contractors ruffing in of the 14'x24' shed, I discovered there were aspects of building I wanted to better understand. Carpentry, as was Wiring, teaches you a profession.

Filled with info...
I'm in construction/residential carpentry school now and this is the main text we utilize. It's full of information, split up pretty well to make it digestable. I wuoldn't expect to be able to read this book and then build a house...but it's a good resource.
