Himalaya [Blu-ray]

Amazing photography
The picture quality is amazing and when one considers this was all filmed in very cold, windy and snowy conditions at extreme high altitude up on the border between Nepal and Tibet it is even more amazing. The crew did an astonishing job. The natural ability of the local people who had no training at all is also remarkable. This Blu-ray is a huge improvement over the DVD although it must be noted it is A locked so not suitable for Europe or Australia unless one has an Oppo or similar. My only regret is that the most interesting commentary is a mixture of heavy French accented English and American English set against a quite loud main Tibetan audio in the background and as this commentary is not subtitled it is extremely difficult to hear and follow. This is a shame. It might have been better to have burnt in the Tibetan soundtrack as 99% of viewers will want it anyway, and to then used the optional subtitle track for the commentary. The making-of feature is also most interesting but is just ported over from the DVD and is very poor quality technically and far below the main film and has no subtitles when "English" is spoken.

Himalaya - A unique film experience
I saw this film at the cinema when it was released and loved it. There are no histrionics here, just a simple tale of survival, culture and belief. The cast, mostly non-actors, excel and the location scenes are breathtaking. Himalaya loses a little in translation to the small screen but the charm, honesty and authority cut through. The accompanying documentary of "the making of..." fills in the amazing background to this project and is in itself worth the price of the disc. Then there's the music - unforgettable.

Himalaya - A Great Movie About A Lost Culture
As an admitted Tibetomaniac, I have found it hard to find anything on film/DVD about Tibet of the past other than short black & white film clips or cartoon animations. Himalaya is spot on. It very accurately depicts the culture, mores, and societal interactions of the Tibetan nomads of the past in what turns out to be a "thriller." Will the nomads be able to move across the mountains in time to avoid the coming blizzards? Should they follow the advice and instructions of the elder of the group, or listen to the younger, stronger up and coming leader? The costuming, village sets, and mountain scenes (filmed in Nepal) are extremely accurate. I know this is one I will watch again and again; highly recommended for anyone with an interest in Tibet, or mountaineering.

Himalaya - Fantastic.
Done all in Nepal one of THE most beautiful places on Earth and some of the most Beautiful people. The story is simple about a village of mountain folk who earn their living by collecting salt and selling it down in the city. When the eldest son of the tribal leader dies in an accident the very old father must take over in the perilous journey. There is a lot of love and heart her as well as grand photog. Do not look for stupid Hollywood CGI junk no shoot out or any of that. But these are a very tough strong lot of folk including the women. A fantastic film. Note in Nepal it was called Caravan

Worth the time spent viewing!
Not a movie critic by any means.....don't even know the proper lingo. Won't attempt an "in depth" review. All I can say is, "I thoroughly enjoy this film". It was all great: the life, the photography, the story and the culture depicted was wonderful! I didn't have to sit through any contrived attempts at mind control or political correct social biases and subtle messaging with 2/3's sexual content. The story was as simple and rich as life in the Himalaya! Salt of the Earth isn't just NaCl!Great entertainment, IMO. I actually feel enriched by watching this film! Unusual these days!

Truly A Masterpiece
This movie is mesmerizing as you view it. It is the story of tradition versus progress and how the two merge. It is showing this played out in the Mountains of Nepals in the region of Doplo and show how leaders are born. It is absolutely glorious and takes you to a region not on a tourist map.It is the story of wisdom being passed down from elders, initial rejection of it, and then learning that the way is to merge the two. I enjoyed every moment of this movie.

One of my favorite movies
Worth watching over and over and over... I've been to Nepal, and this film seems to be an accurate dramatization of life in the Dolpo. Amazing work with mostly non-professional actors that give the movie an even more realistic feel. Very nice to hear the Tibetan language. Good subtitles. Very interestinig "making of" special feature. Also marketed under the title "Caravan," but some DVDs with that name are not in US format. This one is.

After watch this movie, stay and watch the "making of"... An amazing experience.
After watch this movie, stay and watch the "making of". If you consider where it was done, with who it was done and how it was done, then it becomes nothing less than an amazing experience.I discovered that movie something like 20 years ago. At that time, it came in VHS. I fell instantly in love with it and mostly for one single reason. The actors, the music, the picture, everything in it made me believe it was real. Then, I lost the movie and it disappeared from the market. Few weeks ago, I ordered my Blu-ray copy which is coming with a bonus : the "making of". Watching it gives so much more reality about the movie and it also made me understand my feeling about it when I watched it for the very first time, years ago. I truly recommend it, not only for the movie, but for "making of" as well. For me, it was entertaining.

An extraordinary achievement to have produced a memorable movie in ...
An extraordinary achievement to have produced a memorable movie in such a remote, high elevation area with totally inexperienced local actors.

Doesn't work in UK
I read all the reviews before ordering this to check if it would work here. I couldn't see anything to say it doesn't so I ordered it and was so looking forward to watching this as it had been very highly recommended to me as a breathtaking must see. Alas, to my disappointment it was not compatible to this region :( I have been searching online to see how I can get to watch this movie.. Any ideas anyone?
