.com The Hollywood concept shorthand for Todd Graff's semi-autobiographical musical comedy may be Fame-meets-Meatballs, but the film (nominated for the Grand Jury prize at the '03 Sundance Film Festival) has an energetic musical heart all its own. The original songs of Michael Gore (the original Fame) and Lynn Ahrens (Schoolhouse Rock, the Broadway adaptation of Ragtime) revolve around poles of upbeat gospel fervor ("Here's Where I Stand," "How Shall I See You Through My Tears") and introspective ballads ("I Sing For You"), while the score's choice of covers initially echo those concerns via Todd Rundgren's "The Want of a Nail" and the Stones' "Wild Horses," respectively. But the teen-voiced covers of Sondheim's middle-age missive "The Ladies Who Lunch" and Bacharach/David's loopy "Turkey Lurkey Time" also underscore its youthful sense of anything-goes abandon. The pop songs that round out the collection are a well-chosen and emotionally sympatico lot, especially the Replacements' "Skyway", the Wonder Stuff's "The Size of a Cow" and even Warren Wiebe's weepy ballad "I Believe in Us." This enhanced CD features include behind the scenes footage, film trailer, cast photos, and bios. --Jerry McCulley

Capturing the Spirit
If only there was available a camp like this when I was a kid, then I wouldn't have had to endure that horrible week of Boy Scout camp where I had to try to catch a greased watermelon in a stinky lake or get lectured by our denmaster on personal hygiene (but that's another story). Fortunately, all of us "outcasts" get to attend Camp, a wonderful film following the trials and tribulations of an exceptional group of teen performers thrown together for one summer. And after watching the film, your first thought will be, "Where can I buy the soundtrack?".The Camp soundtrack is a perfect companion to the movie, managing to capture the magic of a select few songs that linger in your memory after leaving the theater. All of the "new" numbers performed by the teens in the movie made the soundtrack, and incidentally are my favorite songs. "How Shall I See You Through My Tears", "Century Plant" and "Here's Where I Stand" all stand out on this CD. The produced also included to actual Broadway numbers, "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Turkey Lurkey Time", which will leave you humming for hours afterward. Additionally, other songs performed by other groups and people are included to round out the CD, and accompany the first songs well.If you enjoyed the movie, you'll completely enjoy this CD, and will be playing it for a long time to come. Get on the bus, and don't be late for Camp!

Get It!
If for no other reason than Anna Kendrick's version of Ladies Who Lunch that she makes her own, standing out from the tired, winking, overwrought versions of other stars. But I said, if. Because you also get Here's Where I Stand by the lovely Tiffany Taylor, Wild Horses by the lovely Daniel Letterle, and the bravado ballad I Believe in Us by Warren Wiebe. While the CD is great listening, it's worth buying the DVD [or renting it] to see these songs performed. So much is added to your enjoyment and understanding. It's not Glee and it's not Disney. It's refreshing, professional, yes, yet so natural I just fell into the story of young people undertaking the challenges of talent.

CAMP DELIGHT
Just like the winning film it underscores, this soundtrack is a delight form start to finish. Unlike many of the naysayers who have reviewed this before me, I LOVE the inclusion of the incidental pop music that appeared in the film, along with the many "performance" numbers. Skyway is one of the most evocative moments in the movie, and it's great having a recording of it - sort of like a bonus! And the wonderful, fresh versions of Sondheim and Bacharach classics are welcome additions to anyone's musical theatre library. Infectious and fun!
