To count up just reset it to 0 (hold both the min/sec buttons) it counts down when a time value is set (99min 59s max)Power is via a single LR44 button battery cell. Beeps are loud enough to hear. and the build is pretty decent too. Most useful feature though is the stand and magnet giving you a choice.
