Here Comes the Garbage Barge!

Geez, lighten up will ya!
"Garbage Barge" is a book that has lessons to learn from so many points. Obviously, the first lesson to learn is about our environmental responsibility. At the time of this story, garbage from New York City and Long Island was routinely mounded on land or barged out to the Mudhole just off the New Jersey coast for dumping. This book takes a look at what happens when someone says that enough is enough, you gotta find a better way - and in steps Gino with a "brilliant plan". The second lesson is a lesson of geography - my daughter can use a map and track the travels of the barge with my grandson and note how many miles the barge actually goes while on this great stinking adventure. The last lesson is one of understanding of your fellow man. This is not a slap-in-the-face book of Italian-American stereotypes - as noted in most of the negative reviews - it is just a story populated with certain people from a certain region who speak with a very distinctive dialect. People from Long Island regularly "murder the King's English" - it's who they are and it's what makes them prime fodder for books like these. They axs quessions. They say "houz youz doin" as a statement. They say "dis","dat", and "What's it to ya?" Geez, lighten up - if you don't like the dialect of the fine people of Long Island - whatever the nationality, then open an elocution school in Brooklyn and help fix the perceived problem. As for the book, it's a great read for kids and a great starting point for some interesting discussions.

Exercise caution with little kids
Seems like a good book, I just don't recommend it for toddlers... My kid is 3 and LOVES garbage trucks so of course we had to get this... But it has people with guns, which we've managed to avoid so far elsewhere. It also says that the guy who was supposed to take the garbage "had a little accident" and my kid was worried about that. So just fyi if you've got a little kid.

Quirky and funny, based on a true story
My 4-year-old son checked this title from his school library and kept checking it out for a month he enjoyed it so much. We read it every night for weeks. I finally bought it so he would check it back in at school. It’s quirky and based on a true story, so pretty neat with the lesson to “not make so much garbage”.The book arrived in good shape, but the book jacket was crushed to the point of ruin from the other amazon items it shipped with. I had ordered a lot of Christmas gifts that were shipped together. 4/5 stars because it’s not like it’s a collector’s item and the jackets usually get lost or torn by kids eventually.

Cute story
My son loves watching and listening to this story on Storyline Online. Had to buy the hard copy so he could follow along. He loves seeing the behind the scenes of the stop motion photos.

Excellent! My six year old boy really enjoyed it!
I remember when this was actually in the news - wow I’m old. I read it to my six year old and he was in slight disbelief that it actually happened. Pictures were great - very good illustrations.

Excellent read for young and old alike
This book deserves 5 stars. It is a wonderful piece of historic fiction of a problem from 30+years ago that still speaks to our needs and morals today. However, my book did not come with a jacket. Inside the jacket of the book is a look at how the art was made for the pictures and for the video that you can find on Amazon. I think my students would have been interested in that piece. I am disappointed it is missing.
