The Winds of War

Herman Wouk's book `Winds of war' became a bestseller upon its publication, just like its sequel `War and Remembrance' a few years later. These thick books, joining the fictional and historical events during Second World War, provided the subject matter for one of the greatest achievements in the history of the TV miniseries. This 6-DVD set covers the first book, with an 18-hour series shot in 1983.The plot concerns a military family named Henry, scattered and absorbed by the winds of war. We follow the patriarch Victor `Pug Henry (Robert Mitchum), an experienced military officer who in the spring 1939 is appointed to be a military attaché for the USA in Berlin. He is accompanied by his dotty and yet quite likable wife Rhoda (Polly Bergen). Their children include an oldest son, the flyboy Warren (Ben Murphy), another son Byron (Jan-Michael Vincent) who is in Italy and falls in love with a bit older Jewish girl Natalie (Ali McGraw), who is the niece of the famous American-Jewish writer dr. Aaron Jastrow (John Houseman). The daughter Madeleine (Lisa Eilbacher) is the youngest of the three and works as a radio girl. In Berlin Pugh gets the hint of the atmosphere in the Nazi Germany of that time (like the fact Jews are treated second-class) and predicts the upcoming pact between Hitler (Günter Meisner) and Stalin, both of who he gets to meet during the series. Byron and Natalie witness the first days of war, being caught in the midst of Warsaw, where Natalie followed her fiancé, the American diplomat Leslie Slote (David Dukes). The series mixes the lives of the Henrys with the historical events of the war (the occupations of Poland and France; the blitz in London; the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union; the beginnings of the `Final Solution' behind the lines of the occupied Russian territory; the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor to name a few). The last episode of this first part of the story ends with the aftermath of Pearl Harbor: The German offensive is halted on the outskirts of Moscow, Pug goes to command a battleship and fight in the war, unsure of his feelings for the beautiful daughter of an old friend (Victoria Tennant), Byron fights in the submarine, while in the meantime Natalie, who fell in love with Byron and bore him a son, is left onboard a ship in Naples which is awaiting to live for Palestine, since she and her uncle could not find their way out of Fascist Italy, due to his passport complications.The above is just the basic description of the series and despite of what it may seem, it is not a soap opera, but rather an interesting chronicle of the war and a family influenced by its impact. Pug Henry gets to meet all the important players of the war (Churchill, Hitler, Roosevelt, Stalin...) and in this respect is somewhat similar to young Indiana Jones. The war itself is shown from these two viewpoints: the Henrys and the rest of the fictional characters vs. the historical ones (Hitler and his generals etc.)There are many things that make this show one of the miniseries highlights of its time. One of them is the excellent casting. Robert Mitchum brings his renowned charisma for the character of Pug and he does it in an excellent way. Ali MacGraw's headstrong Natalie makes a fine contrast to Jan-Michael Vincent's younger Byron. The historical characters are done more than convincingly. Thusly Ralph Bellamy is the definite FDR (a role he had an opportunity to play years before in the theatre) and Howard Lang makes a believable Churchill. One must make a special reference to Günter Meisner and his portrayal of Adolf Hitler. As it will be seen in the sequel, the director and producer Dan Curtis wanted Hitler to be overplayed. The reasons remain unknown and one can only guess that he wanted to make it less human in this way. Günter Meisner, the late German actor who played Hitler few times during his career, although a bit too old for the role, managed to keep things under control, so despite the fact his Führer is stiffed and not altogether perfect, he manages to give a hint of the evil personage Hitler was. This is important to note, since his successor to the role for `War and remembrance', the British actor Steven Berkoff, was awful, playing the character as a total one-dimensional yelling buffoon. The role of Hitler is a hard and yet manageable task for an actor who can make a character, as shown by Bruno Ganz in the recent movie `Downfall'.One of the other appeals of the show is the fact it was shot on location, with attention put to details that make the historical accuracy. Most scenes were shot in my hometown Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, then still part of ex-Yugoslavia. The producers managed to use Zagreb's past as one of the former Austro-Hungarian capitals to recreate Berlin, Lisbon, Warsaw, etc. The scenery and the costumes evoke the era perfectly, thus making the whole thing believable to the viewer. Other locations included USA, Italy and some more. But the greatest asset is without the doubt the interesting plot which doesn't let go for a moment.It is also noticeable that some of the mistakes that were made in the sequel, `War and Remembrance', (the narrow scope of the victims of the Holocaust being one of them) are not present here. One can only get a hint of some of the future slips here, for example, the subtle message that all the Germans are bad and all Americans good.This DVD collection of the series deserves A+. Seven DVDs come packed in a nice sleeve. Besides the series, there are several interesting extra features: through the interviews with the cast, crew and Herman Wouk we learn about the process of adaptation, casting, shooting and the problems they all encountered while making this epic peace. Some of the footage includes things shot during the work on location in Zagreb.For anyone enjoying modern history, an excellent miniseries with the interesting plot or is simply interested in Second World War, this is a must-have. Highly recommendable.

In short, "Winds of War" on DVD deserves the highest rating. Casting, direction (by Dan Curtis), scenery, and production values for this 1983 miniseries are all tops. This is TV at its best, making the drivel we see today seem even more pathetic. On-location filming of Winds came out great in the transfer to DVD. Clarity of images and sound are so good we'd swear the film was shot only recently."Winds of War" tells the World War II story of a fictional American family, the Henrys. They are true-blue, U. S. Navy types, a vanishing breed. Victor "Pug" Henry is the father, memorably played by Robert Mitchum. Rhoda is the mother, also well done by Polly Bergen. Other stars include Ali MacGraw as Natalie Jastrow and Jan-Michael Vincent as the Henrys's son, Byron. Natalie is Jewish and older than Byron but he pursues her earnestly. They are living in Europe at the time and end up getting married. This leads to conflict after conflict. Then they have a son which complicates matters even further.Back to the cast, Ralph Bellamy gives an excellent portrayal of FDR, our war-time president. Victoria Tennant does well as Pug's extramarital love interest, Pamela, and Peter Graves is good as Rhoda's outside flame. Ben Murphy does well as the Henrys' older son, Warren, and David Dukes is fine as the American diplomat, Leslie Slote. Jeremy Kemp plays a fictional German general, von Roon, and does a super job. Lesser work is done by the actor playing Winston Churchill and John Houseman, who plays Natalie's fugitive uncle, Aaron.History purists may object to the liberties taken by Herman Wouk in his novel and screenplay which have some soap opera qualities. Nevertheless, the Henrys turn out to be a dysfunctional American family, not so unusual these days. Wouk's use of fictional characters to act out every day life during wartime makes an impression that pure documentaries can't. One minute we're invited to a scene where one of Natalie's young relatives is getting married in Poland. Next minute the same people are being ruthlessly attacked by German warplanes. In another sequence we see the happy peacetime life in Honolulu as off duty naval personnel celebrate good times. Next minute we see the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor which brings the conflict into closer, more human terms."Winds of War" starts in the late-1930's--before the war breaks out in Europe. The story ends with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. So, this is only part of the World War II saga. Five years would pass before the sequel, "War and Remembrance," would be produced. Many reviewers feel that "Winds of War" was superior in many ways, especially since Ali MacGraw and Jan-Michael Vincent were replaced by younger actors. We're not so sure, but will save our "War and Remembrance" review for later.There are some far-fetched aspects that some other reviewers have pointed out. Pug happens to speak 5 or 6 languages which is no small feat for an ex-Annapolis jock. With these capabilities, he naturally becomes a confidant to FDR and is assigned all over the world to meet Churchill, Stalin, Hitler, and other dignitaries. Another feature that is hard to fathom is how Natalie's uncle, Aaron, could have her risk her life and her baby's life trying to save Aaron from the Nazis. He has bouts of guilt where he says they must escape to America, but then lapses into his old ways of waiting for the worst to happen. With as tough and independent as Natalie appears to be, it doesn't seem real that she would put up with Aaron's lethargy."Winds of War" is a thought-provoking story that deserves a place in any library on World War II. In addition, the "making of" features include interviews with members of the cast and crew. These help a lot with understanding the piece and how difficult it was to produce. Our advice is to buy the DVD at its current bargain price and get ready for 18 hours of excellent viewing. For my wife and I it was both entertaining and educational.

A + !!! Although they did not get every single historical detail perfect, I was very satisfied with the end result. This movie is in Chronological Order which I like. I am also learning early on in it's War and Remembrance sequel, the 2nd chapter is not in order of time but roughly what is going on in each war theatre at each time ( I will explain more when I complete the monster sized W & R). I cannot believe that when I was 20 years old, ...thirty years ago, I would not watch it. Why? I was already a huge WW2 history buff in 1983 when this came out. But it was the 80's back then so I figured it was just another network TV "Dallas" or "Dynasty." Yes, romance and affairs occur. But do not worry WW2 history freaks. This is, quite simply, the best MINI-SERIES I have EVER seen! AND, the most accurate in almost all historical details with just a couple minor flaws. It can hold a very serious WW2 candle to the best of all WW2 Theatrical Releases and trust me I have seen just about ALL OF THEM! They literally filmed this all over the world in the most beautiful of locations and countries. Made for TV Movies like this and it's sequel will NEVER HAPPEN again due to budget and the fact that cheap reality garbage is what is on TV today. The acting is superb with the great John Houseman, the rock solid Robert Mitchum (one of my favorites all time! Yes a bit old but still growing strong here) and others. A couple/few of actors did not fare so well, like other reviewers have posted. Most notably, Ali MacGraw. She over reacts at times and is especially noticeable with her acting scenes with the great actor John Houseman. Jan Michael Vincent is not solid either but somewhat passable. Polly Bergen as Robert Mitchum's wife Rhoda is a scatter brain but plays her role ok, I guess. But don't let these minor details stop you beyond the first 20 minutes. This ENTIRE series is very, very good. I RARELY ever give out 5 STARS. My only negative is the title musical score and the opening title scenes of the stars. I like the music theme, it's good, but too overused at times. It becomes a bit irritating, especially during the romantic scenes. They should have had a secondary music for a lot of these scenes. Anyway, I am extremely impressed. I can't wait to see ALL of it's sequel, WAR and REMEMBRANCE! P.S. The Narrator is very good too.If you like Robert Mitchum, you must see "The Enemy Below" one of the best Sub flicks ever and "Thank Heaven Mr. Allison" the original "Cape Fear" and his cameo as Admiral William "Bull" Halsey" in "MIDWAY" along with so many other great films he did.Finally, on the subject of WW2, I would like to share MY opinion on the WORST WW2 movie of all time: It's Jerry Bruckheimer's, Michael Bay's and Ben Affleck's "PEARL HARBOR." What DISRESPECTFUL, historically inaccurate TRASH this is. To use the title name as they do and show no respect to the veterans and who died there. Then, try to maximize the movie off the success tail of Titanic for $$$! I thought Titanic was a good movie, as at least James Cameron got his historical details down to the last tea cup on board. This movie, Pearl Harbor, will simply waste 3 hours off your life. Like one reviewer said, he wished he could purchase all the DVD copies in the entire world and burn them. No one plays little league baseball at 7:30 am on a Sunday morning. Nuff said!

My review is on the DVD set and not the series itself as there is already enough of reviews on it so it doesn't need to be said that it's one of the best cinematic productions of all time, Movies or Television.When trying to purchase this set I was confused by all the different information. How many disks? What is the run time? Are all the episodes included? Has it been edited? What is the quality of the Video? What is the quality of the Audio?The Amazon listing said I was purchasing the the December 11, 2018 version of the set. The actual date of on the DVD set I received is 2004. It was wrapped and sealed in new condition. So the Amazon listing is wrong on the date.There are 6 DVD discs included which has all 7 Parts (episodes) of the original series. Disc 3 has Part 3 and Part 4. Disc 4 has Part 5 and the Special Features. On IMDB it states the runtime for the series is 14 Hours and 43 Minutes. The DVD set box has a runtime of 14 Hours and 39 Minutes. I went and manually checked the runtime on each Disc with a Bluray player, added the time all up and the actual runtime of all 6 Discs/7 Parts came to 14 Hours, 40 Minutes, 22 Seconds. So I think it's safe to say the entire series is here without any edits.Finally the Video and Audio quality. I played all the discs on a Bluray player, on a 82" 4K UHD Led TV, with 7.2 Surround Sound system. I really push the limits on these DVDs especially on a 82" screen. All the discs played very well. There are several reviews that state one or more of the discs were defective, especially the 4th disc for some reason. I played all 6 discs, which I recommend everyone check their discs when they get them. See if they play and you can use FF and Chapter Skip to go through them without watching them. They all played very well with no issues at all. The Video is grainy certainly compared to HD or UHD that most of us are used to today. However, I thought the quality was quite good considering the age of this series. There is no sign that it was a copy from a VHS. The night and dark scenes are the grainiest but are still satisfactory. Only the pickiest of the picky will complain about it. Also... This series was filmed for 4:3 Aspect Ratio (Box Format) and it states 4:3 Aspect Ratio on the DVD box set. But with my Bluray player set to pay 16:9 Aspect ratio, this DVD set played nicely in 16:9 Aspect ratio and again I pushed it viewing it on a 82" 4K UHD Led screen. I'm sure it would be even sharper on a smaller UHD or HD TV screen. So I have to say I was impressed with the video quality. As for the Audio, the DVD Box set says it's in Doby, not Dolby Stereo. So the sound is not high tech stereo but it still a very good audio track with no distortion or sync issues.I'm looking forward to sitting down and watching this DVD set with no worries and just enjoy this incredible series. I hope this review answers all the questions I had when deciding to make my purchase.

I have only praise for this series. It follows 3 families in the years leading up to WWII: one Jewish, one American and one English. I've always been a Mitchem fan and this series is an example of "great acting" by an actor who simply became the character he portrays without all the practice most other actors require; all he had to do was look at a script and then walk onto the set and he "become" the character he was portraying. Following these 3 families you get to see in graphic detail what it meant to be Jewish in both Europe and the US, especially since many Americans felt the same way about the Jews as the Germans did. The feeling of "dancing on the edge of a cliff" pervades the entire series and you get to see how American diplomates struggled to get as many Americans out of Europe at a time when Americans were blind to the danger they were in. I have wonderful memories of watching Winds of War with my parents who told me about their own lives in the years leading up to the Second World War and what it meant to be young adults at that time: my dad was just out of college (23 years old and of draftable age) and my mom was still in high school and saw many of her male classmates go off to fight. So I got to see events from those 2 perspectives. My dad never really said too much about "living" thru the Second World War so it was nice to get a window on how he felt and thought and I now have a greater understanding and respect on why they were both so hard-liners when it came to the defense of the US and the need to protect me and my sisters and all the other children born after WWII. It's a great series and should be required watching for the "youngsters" of today because so much of our lives even today were mapped out by that time.

Although some reviewers went for the age of Ali McGraw and Jon Michael Vincent, my problem was with the ages of Robert Mitchum and his British girl friend who was obviously at least 40 years younger. Didn't make sense. Mitchum looked quite old, fat and dowdy as the Naval attaché to the American embassy. I would have expected a man in much better condition. But, I thought Polly Bergen was excellent as his confused wife. David Dukes was very good as Leslie Sloat and John Hauseman, as usual, was very good as the historian author, But I didn't care for the Hitler in Winds, and I thought the Hitler in War and Remembrance was even worse. Both were way too campy.On the other hand, the story, like the book was excellent, though I think a few of the parts could have been better cast. I guess I really liked it though because I've seen it many times since I first taped it off of TV, and then bought the videos. Now, I'm trying to decide whether to buy the DVD's. I probably will.War and Remembrance changed some of the cast members. I would have preferred to have seen the same actors again. Sharon Stone appears for the first time as Janice Henry, Hart Bochner took over the role of Jan Michael Vincent, and Ali McGraw was replaced by Jane Seymore. Preferred the original cast there. Steven Berkoff took over the role of Hitler. John Gielgud took over the role of Aaron Jastrow. Actually, I didn't think any of the replacements were as good as the original cast, but I think about 6-8 years had past , so by then many of the characters were no longer avaiable or they were probably too old for the part.Still the war story was very good, and I'm sure the whole thing was quite true to life, except perhaps Natalie's story which seemed too contrived. I don't think an American girl with a child would hang around Nazi Europe with a stubborn uncle. jmo.If you haven't seen it, you should definitely watch it. I promise you won't be disappointed!

Outstanding mini series that could not be made tody. Nice to see real people and sets not ai created. I saw this series in 80s. Better for me today since i lived in europe for many years. A real treasure.

The Winds of War is an excellent TV mini series from my early days that blew me away back then. Still solid today as are the books they came from.

Robert Mitchum and Ali McGraw have superb performances in this series about the time prior to WWII. The story is very good and the beautiful music is an important part of the series' environment. Very polished production. High content of family and romantic drama.

Great story, very well acted. Kept me gripped grom beginning to end. Wish it was downloadable in sreaming form
