If you are installing this in a Porsche 986 Boxer, you'll need a Torx 25 screwdriver, and your fingers, and 5 minutes. Open the hood over the front trunk. Remove the battery cover moving the twist knobs one quarter turn, the lift up. (Didn't work, turn the knobs one quarter turn more. That should do it.) To the left of the battery (passenger side on north american cars), there is a cover held down with one T25 screw. Unscrew that and remove the cover. The air filter is tucked under the dash. Just lift it out and discard. Take the new filter out of the box and place it where the old filter sat. The exposed ribs go on the top, the foam ridge goes on the bottom. Push it until it lays flat. Replace the filter cover (put the tab in the groove) and refasten the screw. Replace the battery cover (again tabs in the groove first) turn the locking knobs so the battery cover is snug. Close the hood and put your screwdriver away. You're done!
