Amazingly thorough and accurate; insightful and clear. I could not finish my dissertation or teach my intro Political Islam course without it!

No better book has been written on a subject that so dominates today's headlines.

A generally well laid out and balanced work but has important omission(s). Multi-authored and so sections vary in quality. Some sections are excellent. Wanted to learn more about the political theory of the modern Islamic republic of Iran - Wilayat al-Faqih (Guardianship or Governance of the Jurist) - but just could not find it either in the main sections or the index. Eventually stumbled on it indirectly being covered in other sections I read, so it was not very detailed as a result.Overall the Princeton Encyclopedia is welcomed. The last big western book of this type I recollect reading was 'Concise Encyclopedia of Islam' by Cyril Glasse, which also covered political issues. But while more comprehensive, Glasse's book was perhaps less balanced in areas. Gerhard Bowering's book is pretty neutral and mainstream. I hope any second edition incorporates the omissions.
