Watching The WATCHMEN
I'm not much of a reader. I try to buy books with good art or good art direction for inspiration, ideas.. etc. I do art, so art books are what I looks for & purchase. This is a great book. It does have a lot of art in it, but don't think it's all beautiful finished artworks. It's actually more rough sketches/Layouts than anything else, but it gives you a lot of ideas, n even could teach you some technics/ways of doing some of the art like these just by looking at them.It does have some texts, but I barely read anything... so I'm not commenting on that topic. If you're just looking for an inspiring ArtBook to go through.. or just some eye candy on your coffee/beer/... table to look at every once in a while, then this is a really nice/well made book for you with a great price tag on it. Totally worth it ; ]

One of the best memoirs (for one of the best graphic novels) I've ever read.
Watching The Watchmen is not a fiction book, yet Amazon wants to classify it that way. This a thorough account of the development of the Watchmen graphic novel. It is not the graphic novel itself. This has to be the most detailed and revealing "making-ofs" I've ever seen or read. As a comic creator myself, I continue to go back to it again and again for inspiration and personal enjoyment. It's a shame Alan Moore didn't want to be involved more with it, but Dave Gibbons has more than enough to share to make for a very interesting and informative read. Watchmen is one of my favorite graphic novels of all time, and this book is an essential companion to it.

A Great Mix of Old and New
I wasn't sure whether this companion book would interest and engage me - I've read Watchmen itself multiple times and have studied the artwork and corrollary works. I was thoroughly delighted when I cracked the covers. It contains artwork in various stages of drafting, some correspondence, full color panels, and easy to read descriptions of it all. It did contain some new information I enjoyed learning, and even where I knew something already, the draft artwork or new panels were enjoyable to look at. It's a big, beautiful book as well, and something I will be picking up and leafing through for a long time to come.

WATCHING THE WATCHMEN rocks the house in large amounts!
Dave Gibbons drew THE WATCHMEN in 1986-87, and no comic book of the last 30 years has had a greater impact! WATCHING THE WATCHMEN goes through the creative process of staging that masterpiece, and no fan of comic books will be disappointed in his insights. A solid writer as well as an excellent artist, Gibbons teams with book designer Chip Kidd and delivers a distinctive behind the curtain look at how magic is made and we in the audience are surely the better for it :D

Good Content, Poor Product Description
Product description on Amazon said it was "hand signed by artist Dave Gibbons on the title page". This is not true. There is a photocopied letter towards the back of the book that includes Gibbons' signature, but it is not hand signed. Nice to see the behind the scenes and sketches that made the comic what it is, but it would have been nice to get accurate information about the product. If you like Watchmen, Alan Moore, and/or Dave Gibbons, get it. Just don't expect a signature.

This book felt more like a money grab than a thoughtful reflection
This book is mostly artwork, and much of it is concept sketches. I can see the appeal of this book for someone who draws, but I was hoping for more insight on the creation of the Watchmen series as a whole, meaning plot line and character development. This book felt more like a money grab than a thoughtful reflection. It will look good on a bookshelf, but it's rather too large to be practical.

Creating a masterpiece...
This book provides amazing insights into the minds of the creators of Watchmen. Dave Gibbons (the artist) shows many wonderful pages of story breakdown, character design and layout for this seminal work of comics history. Highly recommend this to anyone interested in the art of making Watchmen a reality.

a very informative art book
This is a companion book for the graphic novel "Watchmen" - by the artist, Dave Gibbons, who worked on this 12 issue comic book series. It's a large, hardback book (with a dust-jacket). It's nicely presented, and offers insider-knowledge on the creation and development of the graphic novel.Given that Gibbons is an artist, this book focuses on the art work! He explains the process he went through to conceive and design the characters and locations featured in the graphic novel. At over 270 pages, there's plenty of material presented here ... concept art, draft material, alternative drawings, etc..As a fan of "Watchmen" (both the graphic novel and the movie), I enjoyed this book. It's unfortunate that it deals only with the artwork ... as Alan Moore, the writer of the comics, did not contribute to this companion book.Nonetheless, it's well written and informative.

Very nicely put together
Dave Gibbons didn't get the credit or the money he deserved from Watchman so put that right now and buy this book. Very nicely put together.
