Outstanding
What these guys volunteered for then did day after day is mind boggling. Yes these guys made it through very very hard training but what separates them truly separates them from the 99% is these guys going over the wire without protection or acknowledgement of the Government. These guys have nerves of Steel. Best of the best. Highly recommend

Very good book about SOG experience s
Easy to read and kept your interest. Sad that more honor wasn't given to these guys. Real heros. Well worth the read.

Another great book from John Stryker Meyer
I read it twice, along with his companion volume Across the Fence. I liked how the stories could be read individually or in order. Each one tells of the experiences of the some of the most unusual soldiers of the Vietnam War. Ideally, if I have it right, they were used for intelligence collection and reconnaissance missions in austere environments. In practice it appears that they were basically bullet magnets to rile up the enemy so that air power could be brought to bear on the large enemy formations sent against them. It makes for exciting reading, of course, but the authors strong feelings and affection for his fellows is what really brought it to life for me. Highly recommended, along with his his other titles both Across the Fence, and SOG Chronicles.

SOG And their courage
These were special men. Where does our country find men? The story depicts the amazing courage with weekly " in your face, life and death" situations. I was disappointed by the difference between these men on the ground and some of the officers in the rear that were put in charge without the ground experience nor the understanding of what these warriors encountered every time they got on a chopper and face deadly missions. These men did it over and over again. Then is some cases return with eye witness intel and have the intelligence officials tell them they were not telling the truth. Remarkable. Book is a good read. ThesE men must never be forgotten. Many made the ultimate sacrifice. When I think of these remarkable Americans, I am saddened by what I see happening with the liberal hate speech of today.

Good Book!
The chapter Bouncing Betty had an impact on me. My boyfriend, Gary Matson, was blown up by a Bouncing Betty. I was aware that his body was blow up, but after I read about Jeffrey Jinkins who experienced Gary's bone fragments, which had punctured his body, working their way out I almost felt relief that Gary was killed instantly. Jeffrey Jinkins ended up by taking his own life due to all the trauma of Vietnam.Remember it wasn't even a war, just a conflict. Felt like a war to me!

A Mind-Blowing Glimpse into Special Forces Operations
"The best military history is written by those who were there -- those who humped a rucksack and stood shoulder to shoulder in the mud and the blood... John `Tilt' Meyer and John E. Peters are two such authors -- they were Special Forces." ~ Jim Donahue; Special Forces Combat Veteran & Former Marine, Highly Decorated in the Vietnam WarMeyer and Peters have compiled a second, staggering narrative about the covert war in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. If you thought the stories were hair-raising in Meyer's "Across The Fence," then "On The Ground" is an absolute must-read."On The Ground" is replete with mind-blowing accounts, belonging to these warriors and their fellow SOG brethren, that literally make your heart race. We are so fortunate that Meyer and Peters have captured these stories and preserved them for the generations to come.I cannot recommend this book highly enough to any and all history buffs, military personnel, and even to plain ole civilians like myself. It is relevant, powerful and awe-inspiring.I wholeheartedly agree with CB "Cork" Motsett's statement in his ATF review that these books make you incredibly proud of our US Special Forces warriors, the Kingbee and Covey pilots, and especially of the South Vietnamese and Nung warriors who fought alongside the Green Berets.

After reading the first book I wondered if there were enough missions and story for this second one. I was not disapointed. very good book if you like this genre

Buenas historias

What does it take to overcome odds that are impossibly stacked against you?
They volunteered for military service, then they volunteered for Special Forces to join the Green Berets, then they volunteered for the Studies and Observations Group. (SOG). They were all triple volunteers, and genuine heroes. This is the story of some of these men. They had the highest casualty rates of all troops in Vietnam, and had the greatest kill ratios per trooper of the war. I found John Stryker Meyers writing style to be entirely unpretentious, engaging, and easy to read, as well as entirely immersive. Of the few books written about the unit known as SOG this is one of the best.
