Burgoo: Food for Comfort

Burgoo was one of our favourite restaurants when we were on holiday in Vancouver, so I was pleased to find their cookbook on Amazon UK. I mainly wanted the recipe for their chocolate banana bread pudding, but was happy to find most, if not all, the recipes off their bistro-style menu, from soups and starters to desserts - and even their spice mixes. Burgoo have taken comfort food dishes from around the world, so most cooks are likely to find something they haven't tried before in addition to more familiar foods.Measurements include cups, which is a bit of a nuisance, but there are conversion tables at the back of the book, and these recipes may finally encourage me to invest in a set of measuring cups. I recommend this book, and also the Burgoo restaurants if you're lucky enough to find one in your neck of the woods.

I had lunch at Burgoo back in June and just had to have the soup recipie. The book had it! Everything looked so tasty in the restaurant, some of which are featured in the book. Cannot wait to start cooking.

Having been to the Burgoo restaurant in North Vancouver, I was excited to see if I could replicate any of their absolutely delicious food at home. I am delighted to say, I can. Tried the borscht, absolutely amazing, we had left overs the following day and couldn't believe how much the flavours had developed overnight. A winner! Followed this up a few days later with the tomato soup. What can I say, it was so simple to make and so incredibly good to eat. Sprinkled freshly grated parmesan over the top and, oh yum! Froze a batch, really stood up to that test too.I have made the Mac and cheese and will make again using less cream and a bit more parmesan. The inclusion on onions, that are strained out later, in the bechamel sauce, was a great idea.I have also made the sticky toffee pudding, which we all found ways too sweet. Delicous , but even for our English sensibilities, needed to be toned down in the sugar department.Overall, a fantastic book to have a any cook book fanatics collections. Nice, easy to read and follow. The only extra element I would have liked to have seen was a portion breakdown with calories, fats and sodium levels included.I shall feel quite smug when I next go to the restaurant, knowing that I can step in and help out the chef, should I be needed. :-)

Excellent recipes with tasty results. Only a couple recipes tried as yet, but both were easy enough to do, clear instructions and mouth watering! I would highly recommend this recipe book.

This book should have come with a moo moo as soon that is all that will fit me! I love Burgoo and being able to make some of my favourites from home is fantastic. Definitely recommend, or find friend who has it and invite yourself for dinner.
