Easy to read and easy to use! A great book to begin coordinating intervention strategies!!
If you are a parent, teacher or therapist who is new to children with selective Mutism, this is a great book! I am a special education teacher who works with preschool/Kindergarten students. I found this book to be a great way to inform myself, parents and other staff members to the basics of SM without being overwhelming. I've purchased multiple copies so that we can all read the same information in an easy-to-read, easy-to-utilize format. There are separate sections for parents, teachers and therapists, so if time is an issue (as it is for many of us), you don't have to read the entire book, just the section that pertains to you. Perednik explains what SM is and is not. She offers effective intervention strategies and ideas on how to coordinate them with everyone involved. My team was able to read the information in a timely manner and start implementing strategies in a quickly and easily. We started seeing results quickly with both children with whom I have worked. If you are looking for something more in-depth, this would not be a good choice. However, if you are looking get a basic idea of what Selective Mutism is and how to begin intervening on the child's behalf, this book is for you!

Excellent guide for treating selective mutism
Excellent guide for treating selective mutism, it is clear and easy to use, and the great thing is that there are sections to give to the teacher which aren't too long and any teacher could manage to fit it into his schedule to read and to be better equipped to help the child with selective mutism. Really practical tool.

Just Okay
This book is a compilation of three small manuals. Much of the information is repeated from section to section. For the price I was disappointed. The reason I gave it three stars is because it does have value for parents to take this apart and hand each section to the people who love and work with their child with selective mutism. It is a quick read and not overwhelming. For parents, serious grandparents and special educators I recommend The Selective Mutism Resource Manual by Maggie Johnson. It is well written, uses people friendly language, full of a variety of strategies and easy to use as a quick look up reference book.

The Selective Mutism Treatment Guide:Manuals for Parents, Teachers, and Therapists:Still waters run deep
This book emphasizes the team approach of school staff and the family and focuses on the exposure based treatment for selective mutism. I am the parent of a child with selective mutism and also a behavioral health clinician. I like the home-based and school-based interventions. Talk and play therapy in a provider's office will not be effective. The provider will need to communicate effectively and work with the child and his or her teachers in the community. The author also provides hope for the child and the family and emphasizes that most of children with selective mutism eventually overcome it. The author also gives a positive description of a child with selective mutism. A child with selective mutism is not controling and manipulative. They are outgoing, talkative, and funny at home but outside of their home they are inhibited, shy, and scared. Teachers play important roles in a child's treatment. I did not give the author 5 stars because the author could give more specific interventions or give some examples of a successful case. I shared this book with my child's school. They seem to like it because they feel that they can help my child in school and they feel empowered as well.

For younger children
This would be an absolutely wonderful and helpful book for a younger child. I'd say 2-8 years of age. My daughter is 12. I would recommend this for parents of younger children as it has a lot of very helpful information that would have been extremely useful in my daughters younger years.

Very useful. It comes with clearly written step to step ...
Very useful. It comes with clearly written step to step advice that helps parents, teachers, and therapists to work together to help a child with SM. I implemented the advice and worked together with my child's daycare teachers. After over a year of not speaking at all at the daycare, my son now can't stop chatting with his peers and teachers.

Written Clearly with great advice
This useful book for anyone involved with a young child with Selective Mutism (up to age 8 but there is advice for an older child in the book too). The 3 manuals support each other, are written in clear English, and have made me feel empowered that I can help my child overcome is SM. The book is based along behavioural therapy/ cognitive behavioural therapy lines. If you believe your child has SM get this book, and go to either a speech therapist/ local Child & Mental Health team and make sure their therapists do treatment along these lines, and involve the parents and the school/ nursery as appropriate.
