Good 1st grade reader, with a bit of sterotyping thrown in
The concept of the Greetings from Somewhere series is Briar family (mom, dad and the twins) travel the world for mom's travel-writing job and the kids find a mystery to solve at each stop. This time the Briar family is off to the Maasi Mara National Preserve in Kenya for a safari. The twins make new friends and spot most of the animals on their list, except for the lion. Will they find a lion before they have to leave? OK it's not much a mystery but it is a good chance to talk about wildlife, conservation and a bit of Kenyan culture. I liked their meeting with Kenyan kids and the exchange of gifts. My one irritation is that the entire story is set in a national park and gives the impression that Kenya, and by extension all of Africa, is nothing but savanna, animals and villages. An image shared by too many people around the world. There's no mention of Nairobi, a city of 4 million people or any other indication that Kenya is anything more than an oversized Tarzan set.Still our kids loved it and maybe they learned something too so credit to the writer and artist. We have a few books in this series and they've all been pretty good.

Satisfied
I have struggled to find a book or series that my 7 year old son really likes...and he really loves this series. It's not overly challenging, but he does like the mystery. The book was packaged well, and received in a timely manner.
