good for home bakers and pros, great recipes, fun read
This is a unique baking book, written by a real professional who bakes and sells out of a 8 x 14 foot food cart in Portland. It contains basic background information about ingredients and organization and excellent recipes that are a twist on the usual. The author displays a great sense of humor (Marionberry "crack" coffeecake) and a practicality of approach making this book great for a young or home baker, but the quality is way above average. The only drawback is that the recipe ingredients are listed only by measure, not weight, so a professional baker will probably have to do the conversion. I like that the author's voice really comes through, making the book entertaining to read. I'm buying extras to give friends.

Not what I expected...
Kir has some truly original and creative recipes. That being said, a lot the the flavor combinations are a little to exotic for most of the midwesterners I'd be feeding with recipes from this book. It's a good book but it didn't meet my expections (through no fault of the book-completely my own tastes). I'm keeping it because there are a few recipes I'll likely use/try but it's not a 'bake every recipe right away' kind of book for me.

great ideas cookbook
I've got about 400 cookbooks so one has to be unique and exceptional for me to buy it. This one is. Made the port-cranberry jam recipe the day I received the book...not to use on the crumble bar recipe, but to use instead as a component on homemade cheddar crackers as an appetizer at a friend's Christmas party. My friend confiscated the rest of the jam to just eat with a spoon, and he is not easily impressed. Other recipes in this book appear to be just as impressive. Can't wait to make more.

Interesting recipes
It wasn't exactly what I was expecting but that's my fault because I didn't check out what recipes it had and I had the idea it was mostly sweets and decoration. I'm giving it 4 stars because it's a pretty good book and it wasn't misleading, I just didn't check it out first.

The Sugar Cube:
I've been wanting this book for over a year, so I finally broke down and bought it for myself. I was so excited because the majority of it's reviews are very positive, and it's such a pretty book. Come to find out most of the recipes are not typical. Very unusual but interesting. I haven't tried any of the recipes, and I'm not to sure if I want to. But hey, I may feel daring one day to make something from it!

The recipes are geared more for adults
This book is ok. I knew it would have recipes that would be out of the norm, but I didn't think they would be that far out there. I loved learning about chocolate. I never knew about all the nuances in flavors. This is more like a gourmet receipe book. I have older children, so I thought they might like the desserts, but they aren't going over so well. For adults who enjoy a more refined pallate, however, this book may be perfect.

Not what I expected
I agree that the layout is beautiful, love the stores and pictures, however, I am almost 60 and the recipes are printed in approx. 7 pt font, the entire recipe is contained in a space maybe 2"x4"... What the heck???? I have to use a magnifying glass just to read the recipe. I just don't see this as a book I will be referring to often, just for the fact that the print on the actual recipe is so small.

The Cart not the Book...yet
I am a huge fan of The Sugar Cube. Some of the best desserts I have had in Portland, have been served out of that little window. I am incredibly excited that Kir has come out with a book of her own. I promise to make this review more relevant once I get my copy later this week. (I hope she included the Fizzy Lifting Drink - my favorite beverage during the summer!)
